Just to warn you, because it will happen. You may get a LOT of friend requests from "hopefuls" with sets up for member review trying to get you to "vote" for them. Being new you may want to just ignore them for a while until you actually talk to people on the site. If they "friend" you then that's OK, but most of the time the "hopefuls" are just trying to get your so called "vote" and have never talked to you.
Do what you want, but It's better to have friends on your list that you actually talk to. Personally I don't send out friend requests anymore. But if someone wants to be my friend, then I first see how they know me or if I've talked to them before. I also see if they have a set up for review or pending. It's all kind of complicated, but give it time and you will get the hang of it.
