A View Of Purpose, Process, And Function Of Reality Based On "QUANTUM REALITY."

The subject of this paper is an exploration of uncommon factors related to the reality of life and things experienced versus things not.

Asking what the meaning of life is, I would get any number of different answers. We each have our own perceptions, ideas, and biases. Can anyone know if there is a meaning for certain? There are those who desperately need to believe there is a meaning to life, feeling perhaps that unless they live life to what they believe are higher purposes, they can never be happy, satisfied, or feel worthy to exist, whether or not that belief is valid. There are those who want to believe there is meaning, out of routine, and let it go at that without real question. Some search throughout their lives looking for a meaning and there are those who really do not care whether there is meaning or a higher purpose to their life. Some understand that no matter what they might answer, in five millennia or so, any response and explanation to their ideas will have little relevance.

Throughout history, philosophers, clergy, scientists, artists and other thoughtful people have expressed their beliefs. There have been hundreds of thousands of papers, lectures, books, poems and stories spoken on the question. Rather than examining earlier ideas, we can search for meanings other than those that are already familiar. Where do we start? The Scientific Method provides physicists, chemists, mathematicians, nearly every thinker, the tools, a way to explore and to discover. The methods of science provides the means to define phenomena and to demonstrate the validity of the explanation at any given moment, any number of times, with the same results. Scientists are in the business of exploration and discovery of phenomena by meticulous collection of data that has been quantified and studied. But scientists have the most difficulty providing a rational explanation to questions of meaning beyond known measured parameters. A few scientists eventually stop looking for the new unexplored, but there is always some young thinking "theologist" in the wings waiting to challenge the rules of basic beliefs and foundations by raising new questions and doubts.

As Robert Anton Wilson put it, Belief is the end of intelligence."

Is there meaning to life? Any answer dealing with that kind of question becomes fuzzier the more we try to provide an answer. There are pros and cons to every question. For every Ph.D. there is an equal and opposite Ph.D. to argue the case. The rights or wrongs, the pros and cons of any question, and everything in between are the two opposite sides and substance of the same coin, within the same limits. Each describes conditions and aspects of the same thing. A highly complex explanation or meaning given for any coin can always be argued and may have some kind of validity in logic, perhaps with no truth within the argument. For example, discussions revolved around God and Lucifer means an argument about one and the same thing and still argue saying that logically the argument is of differences. Our coins have a function, purpose and a use for us. We keep inflating old beliefs with new definitions as a part of each new coin we create. We do that with nearly all arguments for our own reasons. Coins are only models in an attempt to give some meaning to our interpretations of experience and thought. Models provide the approximate ways and means of interacting with reality. We can only speculate about the meaning of our models. One reason is that we do not have enough knowledge to explain the construct of the particulate material world of and in which we exist. We find it impossible to explain the meaning of our perceptions with clarity. How our perceptions describe, define or create reality remains fuzzy.

What then is reality? The answer to that kind of question can't help but be vague. How can our perceptions or insights generate a valid foundation of what is materially real? What notions are our physical realities based on? Many common speculations about reality exist around the thought that a supreme being, god, gods, spirits, entities, a super-consciousness, a super-intelligence, aliens, or some other intelligent singularities are the creators of what is real and we are either being played or we are one of the participating players. Can any of these be scrutinized scientifically where material substance is demonstrated and presented as valid to people of different beliefs? One must be a theologian, a believer or a cultist to begin to argue such things using logic alone with any hope of success. A scientist can't and certainly won't limit himself to logic in the attempt to define what matter and energy is. A scientist continues to explore, quantify, and interpret data, often to seemingly illogical conclusions with new perceptions that can lead us in entirely new directions.

Another view can say that physical reality is dependent on the experience of our five senses which in turn depends on our interpretations and the academic knowledge we have had along our way in life to interpret the experience. It still requires a sort of faith to accept the reasoning that sensations and intuition can be a valid source to explain reality. Scientists sometimes work within these paradigms but can get bogged down in the meaning of their many ideas and explanations. Again, for every explanation there is a counter view elsewhere: the substance and both opposites of a coin.

The meaning of things are generally explained in terms of purpose, process, and function. A simple example for eating dinner; a purpose of going to market may be to pick up a fat goose for supper. The process can describe the activity of planning, transportation, cooking, etc. Function can be seen as the actions to complete the required task of purpose. The entire activity is accomplished by using procedures, patterns, memory, and things that can be observed and measured. A very neat way using explanations in terms of cause and effect. Neither purpose, process, or function explains meaning outside of our own needs, but it does suggest how to accomplish tasks using the models that we have created. The question remains. Where might we find the meaning to life and reality within the realm of the Scientific Method? What models have we created that may answer the question?

The most recent approach lies in the expansion of our interpretation of what reality is in the examination of things we can't experience. There are several views in Quantum Physics where we might discover new aspects of reality. Reality, in these terms, is extremely non-intuitive since it exhibits attributes that are not experiential. The observations are accomplished using devices that are material, man made and apply specific methods that have already demonstrated results that are expected. Mathematical models have been developed and there are consistent interpretations and explanations that can be validated using observed information from the experiments performed.

One of the most troubling of scientific views states that time may not exist. Time doesn't exist? What does that mean? How is that possible? Space-time is at the foundation of reality, isn't it? It seems that time is a property of memory, where the mind is trained to think in terms of a historical timeline. What we call history is an attempt to track and describe change. The purpose of History is to chronicle and create a record of order from various chaotic actualization. We base our macrocosmic histories on general rules of cause and effect and the incomplete choices of events, more than of probable occurrence. Attempting to determine what may or may not happen within any given moment, using history alone as a guide to accurately say what will or has occurred, is problematic. We are only able to record in generalities, not specifics. There is not enough information available to quantify or guess what the totality of a resulting outcome was. To determine what will be from any set of data that is incomplete is only an educated guess. The number of events leading to any point to be examined is infinite. At the end of the story, history can only partially describe our lives in general terms using this model of time.

Time. What is it? The past is gone and the future is yet to come. Both are illusions for us since we can't experience either. What then can we say about the now? We are not aware of the circumstances where our being exists with respect to time. The brain can't experience the immediate condition of our existence. Our systems are too slow to send messages to the brain instantly from different parts of the body. We are aware of and say we experience that which has already past. In that sense we live in a mirage.

What we call a now experience may only be a memory of events already experienced somehow. And what of memory? We have experimented with memory within our brains and have come to conclusions that fit the data. It is still an incomplete model since the totality of memory has not been addressed.

A perplexing contingency may actually explain memory in an entirely different and in a more complex way; as the Biochemist-Philosopher Rupert Sheldrake has surmised. It may be that memory is ubiquitous and our minds are only playing a part, participating in some kind of mutual exchange within an already existing maze of memory. These memories are constantly evolving as each new change occurs anywhere, and are in a state of constantly learning anew. This aspect of memory is not limited to thought processes. Much of the memory is akin to Morphemic Resonance, in part, a state in which all Laws of Nature, or Laws of Physics, exist as a state of memory.

Do what we call the past and future exist somewhere outside of our mind? If so, then time would have to be explained in an entirely different manner. The idea of an external memory available to us takes on a different interpretation as to what effects our being. Our relationship to these memories seem to have little to do with what we think subjectively, but then again... The process of experience and the reaction to thoughts when expressed in the material world, has recently provided clues that such a relationship, the exchange of newly learned memories existing independently as a Law of Nature, can be said to exist.

How is it possible for our bodies to operate or come into being in space at every moment of the now? The function of the brain may be merely to piece information together in order for our forms to exist, survive, connecting the past with future while neither exists in a way we seem to understand. The perplexing contingency may be within the memory that directs matter and energy to operate in specific ways, within what we call patterns as Dr. Sheldrake has said. The laws of physics are explained in our models of matter and energy, operating in special patterns within special attributes. Further, these memories may also be subject to change. These speculations are being tested. What we are dealing with are problematic guesses as to the processes that might give an insight or two.

All that exists in the universe, as is scientifically modeled and understood, is made up of energy and matter individually; and, oddly enough, both as one. When microcosmic objects are observed and measured [fundamental particles, photons or electrons], all are altered in material ways where their velocity and direction are altered. The objects are too small to be studied without using large instruments of measurements. The energies and forces required to examine these wave-particle aspects with these instruments have a major effect on the subatomic units examined. The observed object can only be described in terms where the object had been, in what state it use to be, or where it might have been going. We cannot measure what state each wave or each particle is at any moment without changing its state of existence. We can only say what each might have been before it was examined and speculate how they would be affected during the inspection. They are too small to be kept track of, moment to moment and place to place.

The rules that govern the conditions of examination are entirely different from what is intuitively familiar where we can study happenings in terms of cause and effect. Causality, cause and effect, is an approximate means to explain what has or is occurring. What is taking place in the microcosm of things are best studied and understood in terms of probable occurrences and traced to an end as probable results.

As sentient beings with imagination [a process of extracting memory from the void?], we are instruments that can observe and measure. We can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel with five senses that allow us to observe and measure reality. We are able to alter reality or so it appears. We can say that we create or actualize reality in part through our ability to observe and measure. Reality is altered automatically, both by our volition and action. A call to action is as controlled by a probability, as by the action itself. Many things interrupt or alter a planned actualization of every developing sequence. Directed volition or action is not set in stone. Our choices for action vary and are always in a state of transition and flux. Personal processes of actualization are not completely controlled, only approximated. A complete history cannot be recorded of how any actualization has occurred since there are too many factors leading to the result. Also, no thing is perfect since perfection cannot defined, only approximated.

Actualization appears to be the result of actions based on probable occurrence, not causal effect. If we extend that to an obvious interpretation, we have altered and perceive the changed reality by our processing ability to measure and observe. What is the driving energy behind the process for either actualization or the need to exist in ways for us to experience? Can volition be the reaction to Morphemic Resonance? With this ability to measure and observe, is one purpose to life to generate order out of chaos? It appears to be the function and process of organisms with intelligence, to sense, to change reality by observing and measuring the world around them in order to survive. It could be said that a function of life is to actualize order out of chaos in order to exist. Transcendence of order out of chaos and the actualization of realities may be a by product of life.

Can we extrapolate the notion of memory to inanimate things, i.e., wind, climate, temperature, humidity, etc.? Since these forces alter observable reality, and are outside our ability to control in a significant way, a curious condition is in effect. We might also say that these inanimate objects have a kind of measuring capacity that can use some sort of memory to be what it is.

Quantum mechanics provides us additional clues as to what reality might be. We are still building knowledge based on Quantum mechanics. The patterns [rules] that govern the conditions of interpretation are entirely different from what we are familiar intuitively where we can study things in terms of cause and effect.

Erwin Schrodinger developed Wave mechanics. He created a view of multiple states of existence with his Cat in the Box thought experiment. A cat is placed in a box, which is sealed and isolated where the means of maintaining the health of the cat indefinitely is provided. A means that will kill the cat is also introduced in the box. How can you know of the condition of the cat, whether it is healthy, dying, or already dead and festering at any instance, without examining the contents of the box? Logically there is a conditional state that satisfies the question. The cat is in a state of being both dead and alive until it is observed. The conditional circumstance is a wave, as Schrodinger envisioned it. He reasoned that the required condition of a wave collapse had not yet been met since the wave was not observed and measured. With this perceptive view, many questions of Wave Mechanics have been examined, proven and have yielded valid application models.

Matter and energy were explained as being of two distinct models of the material world. Schrodinger developed a third model. His point was that there exists three states for the study of waves and particles, each separately and also both together as a single entity. This can be proven by the behavior of photons in the experiment where photons are released one at a time and must pass through either one of two identical slits in a metal plate placed in the way of the photon's travel. The behavior of a photon exhibits three states of existence, either as a particle, a wave or both at the same time. The photon exhibits one condition or the other depending on the probability of its state or the expected place of where it is supposed to be according to the state of everything around it. As a particle, it may be that the photon knows that it must go through the side that will eventually balance equally the number of photons passing through either of two slits. Behaving as a wave rather than a particle, it is just as likely that interference patterns beyond the two slits develop packets of energy that operate as particulate matter.

The wave collapse, as a theory, states that waves collapse and an actualization occurs when the process of observation and measurement is conducted. Everything may already exist as a wave form, a state we cannot experience and is actualized by this process. When a wave collapse occurs, a reality may be actualized to something we experience.

Holographic wave tapestries may exist where other wave tapestries are in collision creating wave interference that result in a collapse of the wave, or packets of energy. At the point of collision, a collapse of a front creating interference points actualizes a reality that can be observed and measured. By this means of measurement and observation, we may be a part of that collapse, able to facilitate changes in a residue that is said to be of a nonexistent reality. Strings may be at the points of intersecting wave fronts. In that scene we are in effect creating our own reality to some degree, whoever, or more to the point, whatever we happens to be.

Another example within a scientific view is one of the Big Bang. The universe came into existence and began its expansion as a result. The Another differing illustration of reality lies within the view of the Big Bang is said to have started from a singularity where time and space was nonexistent, a locality where the somewhat familiar laws of nature were altogether different, if they existed at all. The question is raised whether an explosion took place or whether whatever raised the condition for the universe to begin was due to the contents of the singularity being sucked out to fill the void surrounding it. Black Holes are thought to be the places of origin. Anti-space/time, where gravity and other forces may be negated, may be a condition of the void where the universe will not collapse. The void may not be void after all, and may contain patterns that draws the wave that existed as a part of the singularity, to itself. The collision, mixing, or joining of these forces, energies, or whatever can generate all kinds of different realities. And so on and so on. Finding creative metaphors within our own existence is the stuff that dreams are made of and provide directions for exploration. Everything leading up to the Big Bang remains a mystery, as well as the nature of all things. Within this view there is an interesting happenstance. If patterns or the laws of nature of today were different or nonexistent before the Big Bang, it follows they may still be in a state of flux somewhere, still changing and evolving. If Morphemic Resonance has truth to it, how long before other realities interfere with our accepted fixed reference points. If there is an anthropomorphic GOD, HE, SHE, or IT has very busy plates to contend with.

Where does it leave us in terms of a universal reality as we have come to understand it, with our comprehensive explanations of space/time, energy, waves, vibrations, matter, and motion? It indicates that what we have observed and defined as laws of physics are even more inaccurate explanations of reality. The laws of physics are only models of what we have created and developed according to limited interpretations of the knowledge and perceptions available to us. Quantum Mechanics is still providing us with new and different perspectives, a new reality, a Quantum Reality.

To repeat, the explanation of experiences within the universe in the terms of quantum mechanics is counter intuitive. Looking for explanations of reality in this paradigm, for our own lives, will not be easy. Yet, if we are to find A MEANING TO LIFE AND REALITY, we must explore the workings of the cosmos and universe on that level. It stands to reason that the foundation of physical reality is built on microcosmic building blocks. The universe fundamentally operates on the quantum level and it is there where the foundations of reality must be studied.

We can look at another and entirely different view of intelligence. There seems to be many different aspects rather than a single view of awareness. We have learned several efficient methods of information transfer over long distances. One is by the radiation of coded electromagnetic waves. The transfer of information is a key to life. We have small crystalline magnets in our brains. All living things have an information code within its genetic structure. The information within the genetic code determines the development of the structure and instructs the host to develop the structure into a virus or a sequoia. How did the structure of the gene develop in the first place? No one can say for certain. It seems reasonable to say that it may have been created by many accidents and as a course of evolutionary development. By definition, without the ability to transfer or to be receptive to communicated information, there can be no life or intelligence.

There can be no life on earth without the sun. All living things on the planet are dependent on the suns radiation of electromagnetism for their existence. The sun radiates massive quantities of electromagnetic waves and particles. As Dr. Sheldrake indicates, if we are to say that information in the form of radiated electromagnetic, electro-optical, or other kinds of waves are necessary for life to exist, then the sun, as stars are, may be thought to contain and emit a vast memory of patterns and is a wealth of information of process and function. Galaxies may also be a repository of information.

Is the sun aware? It might be. Awareness comes in many forms. We place limits on the term awareness assigning any number of defined characteristics. It seems reasonable there are extended forms of awareness that we are not familiar with and are outside of our ability to understand or consciously imagine or experience. There are other forms of communication and information transfer, the methodology of which we are not familiar but which are easily demonstrated. We can observe the still remarkable case of one kind of information transfer that people with green thumbs have. They have an ability to communicate with plants in ways that are easily measured and observed, and not understood at all.

Logic is full of pitfalls, especially in trying to understand paradox that can take us in many peculiar directions. There are probably many other aspects of paradox and undiscovered processes of logic that exist. Language is the major stumbling block where nearly everything defined requires a descriptive metaphor to explain the meaning of any definition. Incomplete descriptions are therefore used to describe new meanings.

What follows are few more simplified non-intuitive occurrences and speculations in the realm of Quantum Mechanics that contain paradox. Patterns or laws of process and function are being explored that may yield new methods of discovery, as well as methods of actualization.

A mathematical condition discovered by John Bell states that when any change occurs in the universe, the change is felt instantaneously throughout the universe. Where can we use that concept in order to explain what is.

Matter is said to disappear for no observed reason and reappears in some other part of the universe just as mysteriously. What has disappeared is instantly replaced by another condition that may not be identical. As far as we are able to determine, changes in state and being just happen.

Photons travel at the speed of light. They do not age since time is nonexistent at that speed. All photons are fundamentally the same as when they were created.


so many possibilities....

So where do we find A MEANING TO REALITY when we can choose any of these explanations in combination? Reality is only best served in ignorance, and as I have implied at the very beginning, is a matter of choice when we accept models we create. Belief is based on the acceptance of an idea that what is believed works, no matter how temporary the explanation. Neither an idea we choose to believe nor the numbers of people who want to believe as some do make it any more complete or valid than the next idea. Trying to meaningfully explain what reality is, is impossible since it appears that we know no certainty outside of what we believe we can experience and imagine. Knowledge is always in a state of flux and so is the explanation of actualization. Reality is in a state of flux as well, as it depends on our ability to observe and measure, two factors that change what is. All sorts of ambiguities need to be sorted out before we can truly say we understand very much.
