I've got the machine curse today. For some reason, every technological object that I have touched today seems to break. Or at least irritate me to some degree.
Case in point:
I went in to work today to finish a paper proposal for a conference in October. For some reason, I couldn't log into my work computer. I had to call someone from the computer help center to come to my office and physically reconfigure the whole system so I could log in. To make matters worse, my office telephone isn't working either, which is tied into my internet connection. So no computer, no phone, no internet. Hard to get a lot done with those three strikes against you.
Further complicating things, I was working some on my laptop. I got up to get something from another room. I wasn't gone five minutes. I came back to continue working, and my laptop was dead. Kaputt. You name it. The damn thing isn't two months old. It was plugged in, so it wasn't a dead battery. I tried another computer in the plug, which worked. So it wasn't a bad socket. I switched power cords. Still no luck. Dead as a doornail.
So, the same computer guys took a look at it and were clueless. They took my laptop with them to have a closer look, and if they can't figure it out, they will have to call and/or send it to HP to get it looked at. Argh. I need that laptop.
One final thing. For some reason, my iPod decided to stop playing all Purchased Music. The other stuff it played fine. Purchased? FOrget it. Fortunately, I figured that one out. But it was a quiet ride home.
So please, for the love of all that is sacred, keep your toasters and DVD players away from me.
This computer will self-destruct in five seconds.

actually for a first day back at work it went surprisingly well! there were no techonology issues for me here, so that's always a plus.
