I'm due an update...here goes.
The Olympics, whether summer or winter, have always been 'love-hate' with me. I love the competition and the international-ness of it, but I absolutely hate the way that it is covered and protrayed on television.
Don't get me wrong--I love the fact that Olympic coverage is on three or four different channels simultaneously. I hate the fact that most of it is tape delayed.
I love that there are hours and hours of coverage a day. I hate that most of that time is taken up by talking heads or sob stories about one of the athlete's mothers who had cancer, yet drove her son 400 miles a day to ski-jump practice. If I wanted a story, I'd watch the lifetime channel. I simply want to watch the events.
Is there any fucking country involved and participating in the Olympics other than 'Merica and Italy (the host nation?) I know I live in the USA, but golly, I might be interested in other countries' athletes and watching events that the USA doesn't have (if you'll pardon the pun) a snowball's chance in hell. Nordic combined? Biatholon? Bring it on!
There are a couple of things that NBC is getting better about. One of the highlights of the Olympics for me is the Parade of Nations during the opening ceremonies. I enjoy seeing athletes from all of the countries coming out in their outfits and waving their flags. This year, at least, they showed every country's delegation. In the past, they would cut to commercial, and when they returned you would have missed several countries' athletes.
But the sappiness factor has gone over the roof. What I need, and think ought to be an option, is the C-Span version of olympic coverage. Raw, unbiased coverage ot the events without any fucking talking heads.
I love ya Bob. Just shut the hell up for a minute! And lose Brian Williams. He adds nothing but pain to the broadcast. And Mary Carillo is a man. I'm convinced of it.
Ironically...the sport I enjoy the least on the Winter Olympics? Figure skating. See the above reasons why.
