I recently got back from a trip to West Virginia to see some members of my family. Because I do not have a car, and my family lives in a somewhat remote part of the state, traveling to and from took two days each way. While I was traveling home, I ended up staying in one of the worst hotels I have ever encountered, even counting youth hostels.
The hotel in question was a Howard Johnson Express Inn in Washington D.C. Even though it cost nearly one hundred dollars to stay there for one night, it was an extremely dirty, shabby establishment. The room I stayed in, as well as the lobby, had distinctly unpleasant odors. The carpets were unvaacuumed, and the place overall had a genuinely sleazy atmosphere to it, like a place where you would take a particularly cheap streetwalker.
The amenities they had for breakfast were pathetic. Their "free continental breakfast" was comprised of mini-muffins they could have gotten from a supermarket, some bagels, and a choice of either Fruit Loops or Corn Flakes. While I was eating breakfast, one of the clerks had to chase away a former guest who was apparently still eating there.
What was particularly galling was that while traveling to WV, I had stayed at a far more cleanly youth hostel for half the cost...
