blog about Spartacus

I'm not sure without checking if I've mentioned that I've discovered and very much enjoy Spartacus

This besides the naked men that I'm so not a fan of
This also besides the hyper gratuitous violence that I'm also not a fan of
And this besides the profuse coarse language that would cause my ears to bleed but

wtf this isn't NBC.

As such though, giving the show a chance besides all of the above and that it's effectively a broadcast 300... I don't know. There's something about it beyond nude Lucy Lawless.. beyond the blood and the sand. Something deeper that deals with the core principals of humanity which are retold so many difference ways, but this one manages it so well.

I think it comes from, or made me realize that I really HATE malice. Not just lies but duplicity and violence with no other reason than feeding someone's psychopathy.

I've managed to sit through all the violence, all the vulgar language.. and all the depictions of sex that remain far from pornographic, at least compared to other stuff like True Blood... the show, in it's characters, has something of an innocence of it's own. Like it's a tween trying out all those things that make other productions so horribly objectionable.

This I think is a play. They've managed to keep it innocent and on nobler topic, only so that when the shit really hits the fan, it'll hurt more.

If the last episode is any indication.. like many other recently, I'm going to have to give up this show because at it's core there is malice. There is sick violent disturbed bullshit that has no place in the retelling of this mythical time. And again, that's besides the point that the real events and characters that inspired it were probably much more depraved.

Does it have to be? Where should the line be drawn between effective story telling with such hyper graphic violence and depictions of sex have to be coupled so intimately with evil. True, empire ruining evil. That something I've come to look forward to is ruined because there's nothing it's trying to glorify more by all the horrors and debauchery it presents, than evil. Someone maneuvering everyone else into positions where they end up killing each other senselessly. Nothing more to expect of course given the title legendary gladiator and his life and death but where does that leave the final few episodes?

Why should I watch them knowing there's not just violence and sex, and bad language ahead but more of this for the pure sake of it evil backstabbing.
