so seriously now.
my cat is sick. and i'm worried to death about him. he has a wound from a catfight, and now a lump under his skin around the area where the bite was. he still walks ok, and is eating. but he just sleeps all day, and his fur looks like hes not cleaning it as much.
bad news always come in three's, i'm just hoping i've had all three now.

-is your kitty indoor and outdoor, and if so is he current on vaccinations?
-is he FIV/FELV negative, as this can complicate a bite wound abcess tremendously
-how big is the abcess and where is it located?
The biggest concern with abcesses is not necessarily the abcess itself (though a bad one can progress to sepsis in certain rare situations), but the secondary implications such as fever, anorexia, and possible exposure to FIV. If your kitty will let you, have someone scruff him and take his temperature rectally with a digital, NOT mercury, thermometer...use KY! If his temp is over 103.5, best to see a vet. Norm for small animals is 100-103, and just like with humans, a fever, especially a significant one, can cause brain damage. Also, cats are prone to a condition called hepatic lipidosis that occurs as a result of anorexia that lasts longer than 48 hours. This can have serious implications on your cats liver, and is fatal. Never allow your cat to go more than 36 hours without eating. So, my recommendation is to take the cat in if you can afford to for a consult and antibiotics, if not, you should write me at my email and I'll see what I can do on the antibiotic front for you. And if you havent had your kitty tested for FIV and leukemia recently, its money well spent. Hope this was at least somewhat helpful....sorry so longwinded!
