I guess you have to figure out if want to be his friend if he says he doesn't want the 'other stuff' (and figure out if you do remain his friend if you can say no to any such 'benefit' requests) (or if you can divorce the action from the feeling)
A concrete no is better than an abstract maybe. (it hurts a little more up-front, but it gets the gut-wrenching mystery out of the way)
