God? I still think He's there somewhere. But if we could understand Him, He wouldn't be God. I've always thought of it as dogs trying to understand humans; they only comprehend us when we're directly helping or hurting them, but not when we might be doing something else for them that their brains couldn't possibly comprehend. I don't know if that's at all comforting, but I didn't want to leave some saccharine message that would come off as naive posturing.

The great thing about love is that it isn't restricted to JUST.THAT.ONE. If he doesn't want to reciprocate, there's more that will. Doesn't mean you don't have to love him any less. (Love isn't a limited quantity).
I guess you have to figure out if want to be his friend if he says he doesn't want the 'other stuff' (and figure out if you do remain his friend if you can say no to any such 'benefit' requests) (or if you can divorce the action from the feeling)
A concrete no is better than an abstract maybe. (it hurts a little more up-front, but it gets the gut-wrenching mystery out of the way)

I think I have the Plague too. 
The silver lining about finding out things the hard way is that you really do learn from them that way; hell, for me, sometimes that's the only way to learn. But whoever this guy is, all I can say is don't give him the sort of power over you to make you feel like this for too long. The biggest way to send someone a nice "fuck you" is to make them irrelevant; I think that's much more powerful than hating them. Coming from someone who's been there before, all I can really say is keep your head up, eyes forward, and be ready to kick someone in the balls if the opportunity presents itself.
