The first week of the new semester is over, the house is clean, and I've had a well-deserved nap -- I'm officially ready for the Labor Day weekend.

School-wise, my schedule reads as follows: Jazz in American Society, Rock n' Roll in American Society, and The American South, which is with a professor I've already had twice before. I'm also going to study up to take the CLEP test and get out of having to actually sit through the History of Civilization classes I didn't take back in community college when I was on a poli-sci track instead of history, but even with that it's almost certainly going to be the easiest semester of my college career. Outstanding.

What I really find myself thinking about the most, though, is the sudden power for willing long-lost friends back into my life that I seem to have recently acquired.

On the first day of class, I happened to be thinking about the guitarist from my second band just before I turned a corner in the building shared between the history majors and the music majors, and there he was, guitar and practice amp in hand, chatting up a bevy of co-eds, because that's the kind of thing that he's wont to do.

Just yesterday I was flipping through my scrapbook of old fliers and setlists, thinking about former bandmates and the many antics we'd shared together, and then a few hours later, completely out of the blue, the bass player from my first band called. We wound up hanging out for five hours or so, well into the early morning, which of course didn't go over well later when I had to drag my bedraggled ass out of bed for morning classes, but it was still worth it.

And then finally, who should turn up in my Jazz in American Society class but an unbelieeeeevably beautiful girl I had a Spanish class with two or three years ago and spent the entire semester trying to mack on? At first I wasn't sure if it was her or not, because it's a huge class and she was all the way on the opposite side of the room, but I checked the class Web site when I got home and sure enough, there was her name. "You do love me, after all, God," I thought. "You really do."

And that's it for now, I'm off to get the holiday weekend started with my friend Valerie. Happy Labor Day, SG!
