The worst Birthday Weekend Ever....
Lets start on thursday, when the shit first started to go down hill.
Thursday's crap-o-la fest started with a shouting match with my room mate in our hockey game, the only reason I could divine was he didnt' want to pass me the puck. Go figure. So after he embaressed the team on the court, he proceded his jovial antics the entire game. I won't bore you all with the details of it, but it was un-fun.
Friday was great; had my first game with the Cheifs and it was awesome. My line was clicking, everyone kicked ass. We won a resounding 7 to nill. But alas, it wasn't to be a sustained bliss. Once my roomates returned home at 1:30 in the morning, decided it was a perfect time to start a Mario Party Marathon. They did atempt to keep things quiet but to no avial.
Saturday was my "official" birthday. Played with my son for a while before I left to attend Yonderboy's Aries party. It was fun even with low attendance. I did get to meet Jasmin, and one of her friends (who's name escapes me at the moment). I left early to meet up with some friend of mine, to get ready for the next day's airsoft event.
Sunday. sunday. sunday. I was me and my comrades off to Fort ord for Operation Paper Angel. I've sense for gotten the particulars of the senario, but will never forget the circumstances under witch it ended. As we ralleyed up before the start of the first game I was over come with a sense of bravado. Looking at the veteran airsofters on our side for this event gave me a chubby. The guys from Baash, AEX, and Nor Cal Airsoft were all part of the Opfor (opostition force) for the game. I was so stoked to be rollin' with the pro's, so to speak, I was grinning like an idiot all morning.
Start of the game; my fire team started out as part of an assault on a simulated embasy. We waited for cover fire and proceded to cross the street from left to right to gain the flank. This feild is an abandon neighborhood, two cule de sac's with adjacent playgrounds. Left vacant sense the base closure in 1990. Like the scene from Saving Private Ryan; "covering fire!!!" And we were off.
I lead the squad across the street at full speed to draw some fire, and manuverd to around the side of a tree for protecion. Then I saw a silloette of a person on the ground, I raised my M4 and aquired the shape in the sight apperature and aproached it at a quick pace "ranger shuffle". The closer I got to it the more visual data I processed as to what I was actually approching. A corpes. A african-american guy in his twenties, shot once in the back and once in the head. Needless to say the game was stopped and I spent a good remainder of the day assisting the police, and the event hosts.
Yup, that wasn't exactly what I was hopping to see on my birthday.
I wasn't really botherd by it. I was more botherd by the fact that I wasn't botherd by it. I'm really pissed that this had to happen; to the poor kid, to me on my birthday, to my friends that run the field, and for everyone at the game.
I'm no stranger to death. I've had to deal with it durring my battle with Leukimia as a child. The hardest part being; seeing the kids that didn't make it, the ones that had given up. It's just not some thing you ever get used to though.
I belive that every thing that happens is ment to be a test of some kind. I like to think I rose to the occassion best I could.
