sorry i am not going to be able to respond to my previous page of comments. sg is being super slow for some reason and my patience is not exactly holy today.

last night i went to dallas to see camper van beethoven with my friend ben. it was totally spontaneous and it ended up being one of the most bizzarre nights i have had in a long time.

we left my house at about seven thirty and on the way to dallas ben's "service engine" light popped on. i told him it would be no big deal but we should probably check and make sure he has all the essential fluids. when we pulled into a gas station there were two guys hitchhiking to austin. i told ben we should take them as least to dallas. they looked completely harmless and i figured we could pat them down and throw their gear in the trunk. they were skiiiinny and couldnt have rough-housed a flea. ben thought i was crazy. some backwoods trucker type came out and gave the engine a once over and said everything seemed to be in shape and that sometimes the manufacturer programs the light to go on so that the owner of the car will get it periodically serviced and that the mechanic has to turn off the light. really exciting shit, right? no, not so much.

we got totally turned around getting to deep ellum because thats just the way things happen when ben and i go anywhere together EVER. we stopped at a convenience store and this girl there was asking me about suicidegirls and stuff... the third random person i have met this week asking me about suicidegirls and if they knew me and stuff... i dont usu have that happen since i dont live in oregon anymore. still not that exciting but i liked it.

we found our way FINALLY! it was about 10:30 by the time we got there and i was concerned that we might have missed all of camper but when we got there they had been playing for about ten minutes. the show was about the perfect length. there was this girl dancing around in front of me like she though she was janice fucking joplin on hip hop or something. it was almost unbarable if it werent for how hilarious it was. at the end of the show i was intoxicated just enough to get a hug from david lowery and offer a sick girl in the bathroom a hand (which was refused. i can be too caring.)

so we leave the gypsy tea room sligthly elated and thinking about the last time we made a trip to dallas together... "what was it... three years ago?.. more?"... "remember SCRAP IRON?".. "oh totally!" we're sitting in the car about to get ready to drive off when who of all people walk up with his ever-loving harmonica, hennrietta in tow??? you guessed it folks... scrap iron.

if you dont know the story of scrap iron i'll summarize it briefly. ben and i went to dallas a few years back to go see a show and we ran into this half blind bum on the street named scrap iron. he played his harmonica/wife (henrietta) for us and we shared our raspberry vodka in a fruitopia bottle with him. after the show we drove home and i slept on ben's couch and had a dream that i lived in twin peaks with laura palmer and tiffany amber theissen and i went outside to see the aurora borealis and scrap irons face appeared in my dream and shouted "NORTHERN LIGHTS!!" and then a big wave washed over me and i woke up thinking i was the little mermaid. it was one of the weirdest dreams i can remember.

so, after being in dallas tons of times since then and not seeing him the second time ben and i go, years later, we see him! what are the chances? anyway, i thought that was pretty crazy. it doesnt end there though, folks.

scrap iron directs us to this nice little diner where we sit down and order a grill cheese and some coffee. by now it's about two in the morning. after ordering we realize that the place doesnt take cards and that we are going to have to go to an ATM. instead, this stranger sitting a booth over from us says, don't worry about it. i'll take care of it for you... anyway, we get into this conversation with this dude and realize that he has a daughter named hennrietta which is really weird considering we just had a run in with a lovely harmonica by the same name. anyway, i am going to have to go so to make a long story... long as hell but to shorten the ending... we gave the guy a ride to what we were assuming was home and he had us just drop him off at this corner. he told us he was homeless and that he had some shelter not too far from there. we were shocked! the guy had on a really nice coat and was vdery well groomed and uh.... he bought US dinner!!! what the wha? it was really freaking weird.

tomorrow my journal entry will say... "god danggit"

Great story! Is it spelled Deep Ellum? I play an old jugband song called Deep Elem Blues about the place and I've seen it spelled Elem and Ellum - it seems to me in an interview some time ago with Edie Brickell and New Bohmemians who started out there it was spelled Elem, and on different recxordings I have it's spelled Elem. I'm too lazy to go to an online atlas of Yahoo!Maps or whatever, and it's more fun asking a beautiful young woman anyway. Love Australia - one of my dreams is to go there. Wish I could hear you speak - love the accent.
