In this update:
* Crux joins Audioscrobbler
* The return of MS Paint (just one though)
* Crux's Winamp skins (classic style)
* An awesome new Firefox Greasemonkey extension for you
* Lyrics o' the day (Le Tigre)

Hey cool! Le Tigre mentions Julie Doucet in their song "Hot Topic" biggrin biggrin biggrin I loooove Julie Doucet, she draws hilarious comics. That's already an awesome song but that is too cool they mention Julie. They don't pronounce it right though. It's "doo-SAY" not "doo-SET" (she's French Canadian).

So I joined Audioscrobbler.

It wasn't taking any of my songs for a few hours after I installed it, but after a while the server got un-overloaded and took my music. The server is again overloaded now, so my list is not up to date. You might be surprised at the variety of stuff I listen to (wink wink). I only joined, like, yesterday, so the statistics are obviously not going to say as much as they will in a few weeks or so.

I was multitasking like a FIEND yesterday. I chatted with Redbeard3 for a long time, but during our conversations I kept having to get up (to pee usually), or I was trying to do a million things at once on the computer.

Speaking of which, my wrist and arm are starting to complain frown I don't want carpal tunnel. Please no. Argh. As a (hopefully) future programmer I may not be able to avoid carpal tunnel. What does the future hold for Crux? And more importantly, for her wrists and arms?

I'm discovering that Saint Etienne's Good Humor is a really great album. Will it replace So Tough in my affections? We'll see. So Tough just has this... thing, you know? You don't know. Oh well. *shakes head*

Anyway this audioscrobbler thing led me to dump every last one of my mp3s into my Winamp playlist. I've been cutting away some tracks and taking out the videos, and now it's at 1815 songs at the time I wrote this. For me that's a lot. I didn't realize Winamp played videos so it was pretty effin' cool to be sitting here listening to music and suddenly have the video for Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World" come on. It was directed by Michel Gondry. Need I say more? No, I do not.

Except that the man's a freakin' GENIUS!

I've also finally given in and upgraded to Winamp 5 point whatever. Wanna know the dumb reason I stuck with version 2 point something? I didn't think it would let me use classic skins for some reason. I was delighted as I installed it yesterday to discover that not only would it let me use classic skins, it also had the option to use the same skin I've been using all this time. My skin is a Stevie Nicks one I started making and never completed. Man... I've been using it for YEARS now. I didn't even realize. Whoa.

That's right, I've made Winamp skins. Wanna see one I made back in 2000??

It's my Soul Blazer skin (RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS). Givin' props to an obscure (but awesome) SNES action/adventure game. It's still up on Winamp.com after all these years so I guess they like it (and it's incomplete too, I didn't skin the AVS). I put a hell of a lot of work into that thing (Winamp skinning is very long and tedious work, you know) and I think it's pretty great. It has some radtastic animated cursors too, that you have to see to believe.

I really should finish off the Stevie one. Here, look, here's a screencap.

Now, if I submit it, it'll get criticized for being too simple. I'm not good with fancy-shmancy 3d effects and stuff. And since it's been years since I've tried my hand at skinning, it'd take me forever to remember all the code and stuff. If they even give support and instructions for classic skins anymore. But anyway, the minibrowser and AVS need to be skinned still, but obviously I'll just use the bland look I use for the playlist window. And the cursors will likely be exactly like the default Winamp ones unless I feel like getting creative and finding pics of Stevie to use. Or tambourines or doves or something.

I dunno. I'm not confident it's good enough for submission, and if I stay lazy it may never be.

Oh right, so I made a brand new and very awesome Firefox Greasemonkey extension. For instructions and a list of this and my old extensions go here.

Spiky Smiley - This will add an extra smiley to the smilies box wherever you can make a post or comment or journal entry. Just click on it and the code to produce it will appear in the edit box. Known issue: it will look like the smiley is added one line below the insertion point, but it is in fact on the same line.

Before you ask: yes, I can add ANY smiley to the list. However, I figure I may possibly get a ton of requests for smilies to add, and there's only so much I can do, so I may not fulfill any requests, or only fulfill a few if at all. Here's what I can do though: I can add any smiley image you care to upload to your pics folders. Or have hosted elsewhere. I can also add the "hidden smilies" to the list, like :tuffy: and the tampon one whose code I can't remember.

I think this is the coolest extension I've made so far. And it took only 10 minutes or so to throw together, seriously! The Sean skull & crossbones background extension is a close second for coolness.

I am again thinking of posting about my extensions on the boards. But I'm afraid of getting inundated with smiley requests. Also afraid that the staff would frown heavily upon it.

You know... my evil mad scientist mind is getting me thinking of ways to make it so people can add their own smilies to the list. Here's what I'm thinking (it's a bit techie so you can ignore it if you're not interested):

1. Make a plugin that only works for a specific one of my journal entries.
2. Make the plugin pop up a dialog box when you visit that journal entry, which lets you enter the URL of an image file.
3. Add that image file to the SG cookie, if possible.
4. Tack on the images in the cookie to the smilies list.

I'd also add a link below the smilies list to that journal entry.

The question is, how to delete images from the cookie? Well, I could make some code to pop up a window instead of a dialog box, which lets you manage all the images from there.

Could that work? *scratches beard* I'm sure staff would frown VERY heavily upon THAT.

Oh fuck!

1) I love your greasemonkey extensions. I'm going to have to start making a few mods myself. smile

2) I have a slightly odd keyboard. Here's a link:
A4 Tech. It seems to actually work.

I was taught Touch Typing at school, and I find that proper typing on other keyboards hurts, but it's not so bad on this keyboard. Proper desk heights and other ergonomics help too. Using a manual typewriter for a few minutes a day helps strengthen muscles, I don't know if that really helps or if I just think that it does.

The only other keyboard I'd consider buying would be one of these beauties. The best keyboard ever, and you can whack burglars with it too.

I was going to say "I think anything that doesn't send stuff *to* the server is going to be okay (obviously unsupported, but you knew that) by staff", but then you mentioned "the SG cookie" and I had a shiver of fear running down my spine. I don't know much about cookies though, so maybe that's just me. biggrin
