I've been a server for just over 5 years now and it's miserable work. Yes, the flexibility is nice and for a job with zero education requirements, it's decent money. I've struggled for years trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life because serving people sure isn't my calling. I took a woodworking class a couple years ago and totally loved it so I'm thinking about heading to a new town next year and taking a Carpentry foundation course. Now, there are a few places in town that are hiring cabinet makers and obviously I have no experience but I'm wondering if it would be worth it at all to head to a few of these places and just inquire about helping out in any way or just doing menial work while trying to learn things. I don't know if anyone would be interested in letting me do that, not likely I would guess.
If anyone out there has a business and could offer their perspective if someone came to you with a proposition like that, I'd be all ears. I badly want to get a move on things and working a few hours, or volunteering a few hours or days a week would be pretty great. I don't know, thoughts? Opinions?
