This last week was my first adventure with clinical rotation. I had a week of phlebotomy and point of care. Working at a plasma donation center has me pretty spoiled because are only allowed in if they are healthy and presumably hydrated. It is a different story in the outpatient area at the hospital. I don't have anything against geriatric patients but they do pose more of a challenge when it comes to putting a needle in their arm. Interacting with the patients who come in was definitely fun though. I was lucky enough to have people with good temperaments. The chemistry portion of my rotation starts tomorrow and I'll be there for the next six weeks. It is interesting because it has a wide variety of tests but it is also very automated. I am more of a fan of the areas in the lab with hands on testing rather than just telling a computer or machine to do it for me. We'll see how it turns out.
Having to work along with doing my clinicals is proving to be rather taxing. I am at the hospital from about 6-2:30 and then work from about 3:30-8, head home, eat, watch tv for an hour, and then go to bed to do it again the next day. I've had schedules like this before when working on my chemistry degree but it was only for a semester at a time, not 7 months. Some modification to the schedule may be in order if I am to keep up with sleeping, eating, and sanity.
And just for kicks, here is an old picture from when I was getting ready for Warped Tour 01. The bag on my head is because I was dying my hair blue at the time.
