I just read a Rolling Stone article on the war profiteering in Iraq and found out that I was indirectly involved in one of the scams that resulted from the no-bid contracts issued by the administation. In one of my last jobs I was an inside sales representative for an IT reseller in NJ. At the time my biggest account (by far) was a company called Booz Allen Hamilton. I knew little about them except that they had scored a lucrative defence contracting deal and that they needed a shit load of IBM computers from me. I would regularly bill them for 10's of thousands of dollars worth of laptops every month and they just kept spending and spending. At the time the war was already underway and I suspected that they were making huge profits because of it but I didnt have any more information than that. Turns out I was totally right. Rolling Stone listed them as one of the most egregious examples of no-bid price gouging and fleecing of American taxpayers' money.
"Taxpayers are also being gouged by an explosion of sweetheart deals: Since 2000 the value of federal contracts awarded with little or no competetive bidding has more than tripled, to $207 billion. In one of the most egregious cases, the price of a no-bid deal awarded to Booz Allen Hamilton to help Homeland Security ramp up its intelligence-gathering ballooned from $2 million - to $124 million."
So, to all of the taxpayers out there, I'm sorry. I didn't know I was helping these guys rip you off.
