a new day a newpost... hmmm let me check what I want to paste/copy...

another oldie written when Regan was president... (some XTC references)
but sad to say almost 25 years later we are still fighting for the right to say our god is best.....

A movie everybody knows

America is held hostage and so we hear the deal
People learn about it on the reel by real
Senses work overtime to tell us how we feel
But the tele doesn't tell us what's really really real
The statue of liberty is practicing her aim
This is how we celebrate that day in July
Always giving rockets a fly; Ronnie saying "rockets or die"

I'm thinking Ronnie ray gun that we should try renaming
A brand new state of Lebanon as our number fifty-one
We're almost always over there barging into their affairs
If it's not really ours I can't believe in fighting wars
I'm sorry mister President if you think I'm decadent
I wonder if the Middle East is ever gonna get some peace
I'm afraid Irania will learn to use an atom bomb
But if we start to reenlist we will never settle this

Ronnie Reagan listen to the Navaho
Western movies are what everybody knows
You raise the bible and you swear that you are whole
It's still a movie everybody knows

Generals and majors are practicing their tough
This is how we celebrate most of July
Always giving rockets a fly; Ronnie saying "rockets or die"

I'm thinking Ronnie ray gun that we should start complaining
About the dead in Salvador and what are all the reasons for
Advisors for the contra aid to use the taxes that we paid
The only time we'll ever know is when they take us in their hold

Rocket from a bottle straight from the source
This is how we celebrate the forth of July
Always giving rockets a fly; Ronnie saying "rockets or die"

I wanna keep my guns at home
I need some grass to call my own
And hell we must evacuate
Or we might get out to late
Keep our soldiers on our beaches
Stay away from foreign reaches
To protect our reservation
Safest way is isolation

Punch and Judy are forgetting their friends
This is how we'll celebrate the end of July
Always giving rockets a fly; Ronnie saying "rockets or die"

You've inspired me to did out my old XTC. I must shamefully admit I've not listened to them in years.

Along the lines of Rocket From A Bottle (a hardcore version of which I played in my first gigging band), might I recommend Bruce Cockburn's "If I Had A Rocket Launcher," and "Call It Democracy," both from the Reagan Years, but found on different albums? The links I just provided are to pages which display Bruce's own comments on the songs.

I just checked out your band list - Tori and Devo are favourites of mine (the list is way to short for my eclectic tastes, though - I listen to old Viper jazz and even older King Creole and some of everything between then ad now). I like all the stuff on your list, except I haven't heard (nor even heard of eeekblush ) Dogs Die In Hot Cars. Maybe I should check them out.

the one time I saw Devo (within monts of the Psych Furs show) they changed costume lightning fast numerous times. The only other band I saw change that fast was Jethro Tull when all but Ian Anderson exited Stage Left and, with just enough time to get there - indeed, seemingly less) reentered Stage Right wearing something resembling a cross between coal miners' clothes and space suits, and circled around Ian and shone their ever-so-bright headlamps on him as he played solo flute, singing THROUGH the flute - weird sound, like the old talk box made famous by Frampton and Walsh, but imagine it with a flute instead.

anyway, that had nothing to do with Devo, who didn't don the "flowerpot hats" until the encores, "Whip It" and "Are You Experienced?" Great show. Also free (to me - I did a DJ gig on WAMU in Washington DC and got the tix from the Assistant Station Manager) and, I must say, worth EVERY PENNY!

lessnessmen:
thanks for the note, I'm glad you will listen to some XTC soon. From the songs you have listed on the thread I assumed your musical tatses were a bit more rock/blues. Id admit I've become a bit closed minded about alot of rock and blues, but i always felt it was my duty to love alternative/ punk and wave. At the time i was a teen ager all my friends were rockers so i had to fight for the right to party :-}. I never saw devo, i did see the furs twice, the second time was a couple years later and what really stood out was richards brother lip syncing to his brothers vocals, it bugged the hell out of me for some reason. When i saw them out doors i remember how graceful Richard was the way he twisted and stuff on stage. Dogs die in hot cars are alot like XTC the lead singer sounds like andy but they swear they never heard of XTC before they were compared to them. anyway i'll see you out and about in suicide land...
