I'm troubled about getting a good videographer for my wedding. Considering that the business of professional wedding photography and videography is such an all out scam, I'm skeptical. Brian and I do videography and photography. We know what the real costs of this stuff are, including processing and materials. (we don't need major editing or the equipment that would require.)
No way can anyone validate a price of $1495 and over for a wedding "package" when what you get back is a cheesy montage, bad background music, lousy camera angles that will inevitably make me look like Attilah the Hun in a white muumuu, and some lame fade in/fade out segues from one scene to the next. Clearly, Brian and I are in the wrong business. Still.. who will we get to do this for us?
All I want is a two-camera shoot of the ceremony - one camera on me, and one on Brian's face as I am coming down the aisle, and then a nicely done taping of the ceremony, and that's it.
*defeated sigh* What to do? What to do?
Here are my main concerns about video (and photography as well, actually):
#1. PRICE. I'm broke. This wedding is sucking the life out of both of our bank accounts, so I can't afford to hire a "team of professional camera gurus" to make this into the production of the century. I know you get what you pay for, but my needs are simple. I just want straightforward, clearly viewable video with good audio -strictly of the ceremony, which will last about 30-40 minutes tops.
#2: LIGHTING. As you know, this is a sunset/evening wedding that will be dark and candlelit for the most part. Anyone who photographs and/or videotapes us will have to have equipment that can deal with lighting issues without use of artificial lamps or additional light. That's usually a challenge for most people.
#3. AUDIO. It's outdoors. Depends upon the breeze and the direction of it, as well as the audio set up we have, but the sound has got to be good or there will be holes.
#4. MY HANG-UPS. Making me NOT look like the 6-foot tall, round-faced Amazon with the funny-looking nose would be a bonus.
#5. TURNAROUND TIME. Once we get back from the honeymoon (wherever our destination will be) I want to get that video back, preferrably on DVD. Rumor has it that VHS is halting production in less than two years. I don't want to be stuck with a wedding video on VHS and not even own a player in 10 years.
