This is the blog I never wanted to write, but here we go.
Earlier this week, my sister passed away at 40. She’d been ill for a very long time and was also fighting epilepsy. When she first contracted MRSA as well, and they had to put a peg into her stomach for medicines and feeding, many predicted that she wouldn’t make it out of her teenage years.
She made it to fucking 40! How fucking badass is that?
Epilepsy, MRSA, etc. All kindsa health battles this woman faced and ultimately, it was pneumonia that got her. I wasn’t there as I’d moved away a long time ago, but she didn’t die alone, thankfully. She had a team of nurses and doctors, as well as her carers around her, and from what I can gather from the phone calls I’ve been on, she passed away happy. The fact that I wasn’t there for her is a guilt I’ll carry until I’m in my own grave. That’s for another time though, folks.
So, in an earlier blog post, I told a story about Robbie Williams and how through his song, Angels, he unknowingly saved my life. I eventually reached out to him again, through Spotify and Youtube videos. I’d listened to everything from Brian Wilson all the way to Green Day. I think I found an escape through Suzie Chapstick, from Green Day’s 2024 album, Saviors. (Suzie Chapstick is the song that I hope gets played as my sister laid to rest.) Still, that moment had to come, I had to listen to Angels again, this time knowing that there were two angels above me, keeping me safe. My sister is at peace now, all of her pain washed away and she’s reunited with her Mum and Dad. What an amazing thing to be able to type, in times of sadness.
One day, my time will come and I’ll see them all.
Robert Peter Williams, thank you, once again, you may never know this, but thank you for being there.
Now, here comes the plot spoiler. One day, my time will come, but it sure as fuck ain’t this day! Life is a treasure and it should be treated as such. Supposedly we only get one go around on this thing we call Earth, so I implore you to make the most of it. Be kind to people as much as you can. Encourage everyone around you. Encourage your children to better themselves. This world is a dark place, but through every darkness, there always comes light. We are not guaranteed tomorrow, so let’s make each day, our greatest day.
Rest in Peace, Lisa Gabriel, I’ll see you down the road.
