Lord Of The Nerds: Videogame

Please allow me to preface this. I have been a gamer since God knows when, probably around 1990 all in all, my first computer was a Commodore 64 (The Dizzy games were the boss!), I have owned a Megadrive (Genesis in the US), a Dreamcast, an N64, a Gamecube, an Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One and I have owned every generation of the Sony PlayStation, I currently own a PS5. Suffice to say, I have a lot of choices when it comes to the ultimate video game.

I could say Resident Evil and all of it’s sequels, I could say Streets of Rage, I could say Sonic The Hedgehog. But my favourite video game is without a doubt…

The Fifa series, what can I say, I really love soccer/football…

Only kidding! My favourite video game is without a doubt The Last of Us. There are games such as Red Dead Redemption and RDR II, that take you on a journey. You are not only playing a video game, you are living a life, full of extraordinary adventures and locales, exciting people to meet and shoot at, but when it comes to living an adventure, for me, nothing comes close to The Last of Us. It is, IMHO, the perfect video game, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, and more importantly, it asks that age old question, what would you do if faced with the choices Joel Miller has to make?

Neil Druckmann gave us his all with this game, along with Bruce Straley. They didn’t just direct a video game, they gave us a cinematic experience that not even most movies can match nowadays. From it’s very sad start, it went relentless in fucking with my emotions at every fucking turn. The stellar voice acting from Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson (Joel and Ellie, respectively.) made you believe that these people and the hard times they faced, were very real. I will also give an honorable mention to Gustavo Santaolalla who gave us such an amazing score to a very beautiful, if not sad, video game.

Now, I will not post spoilers, just in case anybody who reads this has not yet been able to play this amazing game, but I will tell you this, I am not a man who is ashamed to admit that he cries, a lot. I cried at The Green Mile, I cried at IT Chapter One and I have even cried at episodes of some TV shows. I also cried at the end of Red Dead Redemption II. Nothing matched the pure ugly crying at the end of The Last of Us. I had to go to bed after completing that game because I was an emotional wreck. I left that game wondering just what the heck I’d been dragged through, backwards. I have since gone on to complete that game a further two times, and it’s sequel once (I ugly cried through the whole credits to The Last of Us Pt. II). I am on another playthrough now, on the PS5 version.

I have owned every version of that game, including the original PS3 version, the Ellie edition, the PS4 Remastered version and now the PS5 version. I own the comic books, the art books, I’m pretty sure there are items I’m forgetting, but let’s say, I have spent a lot of money on that one video game alone.

I have seen the TV adaptation, starring the great Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, but I have yet to buy the blu-ray yet, which is something I will remedy at some point.

Trust me, if you’re solely an Xbox player, or a PC gamer, if you ever need a reason to buy a PlayStation, then The Last of Us is it.

Honorable mention goes to Resident Evil 4 and it’s remake, I believe I’ve completed those games about 10 times over and they get better and better with each playthrough.

I will enclose photos later when I get a chance to take them, just to show how strong my obsession is with The Last of Us universe.

@fredhincanada I'd never played a RE game until I got a PSVR, and bought RE7: Biohazard for it. And hell yeah, it's so damn good. It's proper eerie being "inside" the game and hearing noises in 360°, just knowing something's coming for you!

@fredhincanada Oh no. That isn't good. You must play it, as soon as you get the time. If you play The Last of Us (Which is more immersive than a movie - even better if you play both of them) I will watch something at your request.
