Another day, another not-so-great date. I went out with E. tonight, who is a girl I had met online and seemed pretty cool. We met at one of my favorite bars on Houston called L'Angolo (lots of cute Italian waitresses and comfy couches) for drinks this evening, at my suggestion. E. was OK, but turned out to be kind of odd, having really strong opinions on obscure topics like the value of the dollar vs. previous metals and the relationship between creative freedom and material possessions in New York city. Which in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but we didn't find a whole lot of other common ground to cover. So at the end of the date we both pretty much agreed that while it was nice, that's it. C'est la vie.

Today was a good day in the lab, however. Those brains that I spent all day Sunday cutting were stained with fluorescently labeled antibodies that recognize specific molecules that I'm interested in studying overnight last night, and today I finished processing them and took a quick look to see how everything turned out. For once, it looks like it might have worked according to plan. Which is quite a relief, as I've done this fucking experiment multiple times and had it not work at all, so I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. I didn't get a chance to look at all of the different treatments that I did (I looked at 8 different proteins) but at least 2 of them seemed to work, so tomorrow I'm scheduled for some microscope time to finish looking at them.

I have to give lab meeting in three weeks, and I'm really hoping to have some new and interesting data before then, because I haven't exactly accomplished a whole lot since my last lab meeting. Which is sort of bugging me right now. Especially because after that I'm off to Europe for 2 weeks to do some skiing and sight seeing, which means some serious down time in the lab.

So once again I've finished my newswire duties a little early for a change, again thanks to user submissions (several of which came from super-cool people on my friends list. You know who you are. biggrin ) So I'm off to comment in people's journals and go to bed.

Auf Wiedersehn!

some friends of mine have a joke that anyone can say they're a 'scientist'. is that why you mentioned that you were an 'actual scientist' in the Bush vs. Science funding thread? just kidding of course.
