Graphic design? You could start by making CD covers for bands (then you can use them as a reference). If you wanna go the free route, cool. If you wanna charge, advertise on Craigslist. Put together a little portfolio and just rock that sh*t. If you feel you need some inspiration, take some art school/extension classes, and you'll get tons of ideas as to how to be self-employed there. Wish I knew more.
