I can't recommend Genie's Gonzo Americana Blog highly enough. Nice photoshoot of the New Orleans reconstruction.

I walked through downtown ABQ at bar-close time tonight. Not sure why, but it's a little like going to dinner and a movie - at the end, I feel like I've really *been out*.

Weird moment of the night - I'm sitting on a concrete block in a parking lot, smoking, watching the stream flow by and I get a wayward pelvic thrust to my back by a drunk fratkid. No shit - full contact, no warning, his thighs bouncing off either side of my torso, leering something about "free phonenumbers" to his friends... did he think I was a hooker, or just pissed he wasn't getting laid that night? Seems like the kind of thing, out here in the desert at least, that you're either gonna knife someone for, or just fuckin' ignore it. Having, at the time, neither blade nor violent inclinations, I summoned my best gargoyle impression and stared ahead as they walked away.

"The worst part about New Mexico is that it's so close to the United States." I'm beginning to feel at home again, not with the crowds or the roads or any of the rest of this make-believe city - instead it's the plants and the sky, the houses and the people I know in them.

This "everyone for themselves" thing keeps growing on me...
