You've probably already read what I could recommend. Maybe some WS Maugham. More people should read Maugham. "Of Human Bondage" and "Razor's Edge" put me in a tizzy.
One of the problems with reading books by people who have too much time on their hands from the 1700s is that they over-write their novels. However, any book that pisses off Horace Walpole and Dr. Samuel Johnson can't be all bad. I would recommend reading it in fits and starts rather than trying to plow your way straight through. You might want to read more conventional books at the same time as a way to take a sort of Sterne-free breather.
Your book report is due on my desk by Friday. Good luck.
