What do you think about reality tv shows that set the feminist movement back 30 years? How about ones that prey on the fact that millions of young women think that the only way they are worthwhile at all is to be another pretty face to look at? I think it's a disgusting comment on society in general, and that they do far more harm than good in a country where eating disorders run rampant and billions of dollars are spent yearly on beauty products and cosmetic surgeries. And yet, there are such things that grace the tv screen on a weekly basis. I saw last night that Fox is actually running a new season of "The Swan" and the gorge raised in my throat. As if one season was not bad enough, that Fox would decide to prey on these poor unfortunate woman's weaknesses and low self esteem issues to win the battle in the "Who has the best reality tv show ever" war is simply too much!
Last season I purposely avoided watching the Swan, thinking that the premise of it was horrible and such a negative thing to introduce to the viewing public. I think I caught about 5 minutes of the series total, and the whole time I spent screaming at the screen, at these women who would actually go through this level of torment just so they could feel better than themselves. Cosmetic alterations are not the answer to real problems that stem from low self worth, they can't possible help these woman attain confidence in themselves. I think the months spent recovering from these grueling operations would have been better spent in therapy, discovering the real underlying issues these women had that tied into their image. I saw an interview with the winner on some talkshow and when I saw that she had such poor body language and spent the entire show excusing herself I immeadiately knew that this change was probably not the key to unlocking her happiness, that she was hurting inside and no amount of beautification could heal her.
I really feel sad for the "contestants" of this show, searching for a quick fix when they probably know on some level that it's not the answer. I wonder if they will be able to find inner peace within themselves and be happy for the other qualities and skills they have to offer other than just how pretty they can appear in public. Outer beauty fades, cosmetics don't last, botox is fucking poison, surgeries do long term damage, but there is something to be said about the inner beauty of the soul.
We should be stressing that and not what you have to look like to make other people love and respect you.
