I am a mother. I am aware that this is no secret to anyone. But I suppose what is so impressive to me, in particular, about that fact is that I am moments away from being a mother for a second time.
My daughter's infancy seems so hazy and distant at times, I thank goodness for the endless hours of video I have to keep my memory of it intact. But it's bittersweet. I can see the loneliness and sorrow that I masked during that time and I wonder if I was doing a disservice to my child. But she shines. I mean she truly shines like a brilliant fucking priceless jewel. So I know she came out of it okay. She is such a treasure to me. I honestly cannot think of anything on this earth that feels as spectacular as the creation of that little girl. Except - there is in that now there is more amazing to come. More walking around with my heart on the outside of my body at all times. More feeling the explosion of pride and joy at the mere existence of another human being. Parenthood is a gift and it is really beyond my grasp how many parents have no concept of that. But it's not just their loss - it is their children's loss as well.
Mother's Day is a more revered holiday in my mind than any other at this stage in my life. This is not only for myself and my own children, but in my need to pay homage to the women in my family hierarchy. My grand-mother and mother are just utterly remarkable women. On both sides, my aunts and great-aunts are invaluable, strong, confident, funny, intelligent, cultural women. I feel immense gratitude and appreciation for the people they are and the woman they have pieced together in me and, consequently, my daughter.
We grow these little people inside of us and we make it our main goal in life to see that they are loved and cared for while trying to instill something substantial within them to prepare them for battle. And there really doesn't seem anything more satisfying than seeing them morph into these wonderful human beings.
From an artist's perspective it is the most gratifying creation one can muster.
Happy Mothers Day.
