A very dear friend of mine lives in Virginia and works on the VT campus. Thank goodness, she is just fine. The 45 minutes I spent between finding out about the shootings and getting in touch with her to make sure she was all right, however, were rough.

Make plans with the people in your circle and tell them that you don't want to put them in the middle, but that you want/need to hang out without her around while you are healing.
Make sure they understand that you don't care if they want to hang out with her, but you'd appreciate it if they did so away from you for a bit.
Real friends will understand this.
If it was me, and they were not understanding, I'd dump them.
