As someone who takes gaming very seriously, I get asked "When will a game make you cry?" For me, that question has already been answered. The truth is there is a game that repeatedly makes me weep my eyes out. It's at the top of my gaming top ten. It's called Cave Story and it will repeatedly rip your heart out.
I have written A Review for this game way back in 2008 when it was available for free. I think it stilll is, but I recently bought the 10 dollar copy from Steam. I would recommend getting either. The idea is that your little robot avatar has made some friends, and (in the bad ending) most of them die. At one point in the game, You have to kill a crazy rabbit bunny thing. This can be looked at as putting down a rabid dog. It's not nice, or pretty, but it's necessary. Another puppy thing dies as well during the battle. This one is more of a heroic sacrifice, but he's been loyal and helpful as much as he can through out the entire game. This is small potatoes.
The real tears start flowing with Curly Brace. See, when you meet Curly she is protecting children from evil. Once she realises you are a good person she does everything in her power to help you bring the big bad down. for a while there you think you're going to be an unstoppable team. And then it happens. The Core attacks. Unless you ignored common sense earlier in the game, there's an item that is vitally important that will not spawn. After you "win" the saddest thing in the history of gaming happens.
The room floods, Your oxygen meter runs out. Screen goes black, and then, you wake up. You wake up in Curly's protective air bubble. She's next to you and she's not moving. You try to talk to her, to pick her up, to do SOMETHING and all you get is a text message:
"You get no response"
Nothing else to do, you leave the room the same way you entered
And the door closes behind you
Excuse me I have something in my eye
