We just had two days of rain here, Sunday was a lazy day, it rained so hard I didn't want to get out. Good luck with the replacement set. So who would you like to do a set with? Farscape is great, I've been watching my moms, just started season 3.

I am afraid to buy pumpkins because we live in the ghetto and I know I would just be setting them up for a violent end.

Ouch, that sounds like something I wouldn't want to do. About this time last year I was staying at a campground between Springfield and Rollo when this huge storm hit. The wind was blowing the rain so hard and at such an angle that it was coming up under the door to the cabin, talk about getting anxious.

The Missing Manual for Macintosh is an excellent book. (by Pogue, if memory serves.) I recommend getting it and reading/skimming the first chapter, trying out everything he recommends. After that it makes an excellent desk reference, but it's worth the few hours spent on a lazy evening to work through the first chapter.

Some quick points:

The Dock is neat because you can drag stuff onto it and off of it quickly. So often I see mac users with their docks clogged with 30 different applications. This is silly. It's better to just keep the dozen or so things you use currently or all the time there, and drag things off once you stop using them. If you start using a program again, one that you dragged off the dock, it's as easy to drag it to the dock and click it there as it is to double click it the first time you re-open it. Also: You can drag documents onto the end of the dock as well, not just apps. I use this to keep the 2 or 3 documents or folders I'm currently working on handy. Again, once I'm done working on it, I drag it off the dock.

You don't need to look up files that you're currently working on, because almost every application will put a little file icon next to their name in the top center bar. You can drag and drop from this mini-icon the same as you would the file itself.

Mac software usually has good support for keyboard shortcuts. Macs may be known for their mice, but a real virtuoso with one learns the keyboard shortcuts for common commands, working that much faster. (Menu drop-downs usually list the keyboard shortcut next to the command.) PC users miss the ease of left clicking and selecting common commands from a menu, but more often than not, any command common enough to show up on such a menu is one worth learning the keyboard shortcut for. (Plus, you can get the same effect by Control-clicking, or plugging in a 2-button mouse by USB.)

Weeeellll it's just that it takes some time to fully appreciate tha wonder that Mac is. I guarantee after you realize you've not seen the blue screen of death and the darn "do you wish to inform microsoft about this problem?" bit in a LOOOOOOOOONG time, and become more familiar with your new computer, you'll realize why there's so many of us unwilling to give any more money to Mr. Gates.

But then again, it's only a computer, not a whole new lifestyle we're talking about, and chances are you'll end up using both, I mean I know I do, but every time I come home after a frustrating journey of suffering Windows XP's errors, I appreciate my mac more and more.
