Most of you guys are SG's I thought were interesting and a few locals. How would you go about explaining that in real life? Or a random meeting at a bar or something? "Oh hey, you're my friend on SG, right?" Try introducing someone. "Oh hey, this is such-and-such, my ...... er.... friend..... from SG."
See in my case I'm not shy, so I'll just say it, but I guess in the long run it's because I like the idea that there are strange people all over the world I can connect with, even if I may never get the opportunity to meet them.
