There this girl (let's call her Jane from 3rd shift) I was only slightly interested in at work until I found out from a same shift co-worker (let's call her Lass from 2nd shift) some info on her. Like Jane's age. I thought she was in her early 20's. Turns out she just turned 30 which is only 3 years younger than me. So she became more attractive. Now Lass said Jane was single. So I decided to get to know Jane and with a half hour before I had to punch out each night, I got to know her a little. She loves reading and is in a book club. She likes Shakespeare and Lived in Washington D.C. for awhile. She said she was homesick and returned to N.Y. to be near family. The more I knew the more I was attracted to her. Now none of what Jane said was remotely interesting to me but I liked how she spoke about herself.
I had been thinking of asking her out for over a week when I looked at the schedule and saw how we both had the same day off that week. So after talking to lass, I decided tonight is the night I ask her out. It's now or never. All the stars and planets were aligned just right and if I didn't ask her out I was gonna go nuts. Since I was feeling great that day I pumped myself up all shift to ask her out. This is a question I hadn't asked in several years so it took a lot of strength and courage to ask.
Crunch Time. She pops into my eyesight with those wacky giant eyeglasses. I can barely contain myself as I'm thinking, ''Play it cool ol' buddy, play it cool. Don't fuck this up." I tell her how the day went with the machine (as required by the supervisors). Then said some pleasantries. Meanwhile she was a busy beaver doing this and that. By this time I'm about to explode and chicken out and then I asked her out as calm and collective as I can (how it came out, I'll never know because my heart was thumping in my ears so loud I couldn't hear my own words).
The deed was done. I asked her out. Her response? Stay tuned for another episode of: Ask The Girl Out. Kidding. She looked down and for 3 whole long seconds and said nothing during this time (might as well have been a lifetime). Raised her head looked me square in the eye, Clears her throat, as my heart suddenly beats faster and says, ''I have a boyfriend.'' CRUSHED! It was lights out for me. My heart stopped beating for a split second. Or so it seemed. As taught by lass I said, ''Okay have a good night.'' As I turned to leave, Jane said, ''Be careful. Roads are icy.'' I didn't say another word. As soon as I turned the corner, I bolted throughout the whole place with up to 200 people seeing me. I couldn't get to my car fast enough. As soon as I opened the outside doors, I was about to breathe again. Got in my car and went home.
Saw her again tonight after not seeing her for two days. She changed her wacky glasses to the work ordered glasses the glasses she says look ugly on her. I really had to use the restroom so we didn't get to speak. I'll see her tomorrow. What do I do? UGH!
FYI: I made her think for 3 seconds. I'm wondering whether she was thinking about saying yes or a lie to get out of an uncomfortable situation.
