crap I already forgot about the topic I wanted to talk about...I think it was religion tho.
religion-seriously? youre how old and still play make believe?
ok Im not trying to offend anyone but thats really what most religions strike me as. and dont think Im some uneducated ass, I was raised roman catholic and have read the bible cover to cover more than once...most people who argue in favor of faith can not make such a claim.
the bible has an advertisement for paying your taxes...render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's? come on. absurd. and the whole sanctity of marriage spiel? you better get married because otherwise youre a filthy sinner! and because then you have to pay a tribute to the king...and be taxed more. now Im not saying monogamy is a bad thing, but that doesnt have to include marriage. legality has no place in love damn it.
the general damnation of anyone and everyone who doesnt follow an insane, strict set of guidelines is offensive to me. and more so is the liberties people have taken with their interpretations of said guidelines. the whole thy body is a temple taint it not nonsense has been twisted to mean piercings and tattos are an afront to god and the handywork of the devil. if that were true just about everyone here would be headed to hell at the end of their days.
ok let me back track and layout the backbone of the average judeo/christian faith. the 10 commandments.
1. I am the Lord your God You shall have no other gods before me You shall not make for yourself an idol
ok thats understandable for any religion...Im god youre not so you listen to me. as long as one does not lack faith completely theres no argument against that I suppose.
2. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
pretty much the same as the above, if thats your beliefs then your god is suppossed to be a higher being that youre meant to respect at the very least
3. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
same as the above. if youre a believer go get your Jesus on and pray.
4. Honor your father and mother
this is more of a basic guideline for life. a be a generally good person and learn from those who have gone before you sort of thing.
5. You shall not murder
same as the above. its guiding you towards being a respectable mamber of society. its a pretty obvious one, goes right along with the "golden rule" do unto others as you would wish to be done unto you. dont be a dick or you cant expect to be treated any better.
6. You shall not commit adultery
this one I take issue with. for one thing it assumes you will marry someone because thats what the bible says you should do. I think repression of sexuality is one of the most mentally traumatizing things we can do as human beings. to try to deny our most basic and strongest urges is to attempt to cut out a part of ourselves that is essentially our purpose in life. we are human beings...we are animals. we have spent so long working to rise above every other beast in nature that we have now completely removed ourselves from the cycle of life. we are no longer a part of the food chain. we are now the bastard children of Gaia and no long belong here. we are destroying this planet at an exponential rate. our gift of intelligence has gone from being used to better ourselves and our worl to being channeled into creating more and more comforts. more conveniences. and for that reason we areshadows of our former selves. we have overevolved in a sense. or at least evolved in the wrong direction. we have bred ourselves into weaker, less self sufficient,, incapable of survival outside of the haven that is society. unable to live without the conveniences of the modern world. the only thing left to shed light on our true nature are our shortcomings. our war and strife. our violent and insatiable desire to conquer. to force our own way of thinking onto other people. our inability to coexist with that which is different and strange to us. our only instincts left are the ones that drag us down. the ones that outweigh our ability to thnk and reason. we have become the quintesence of our flaws.
7. You shall not steal
again more of the general dont be a dousche stuff. be an honest person and earn what you want. nothing that is easy is worth doing, nothing free is worth having.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
same as above. lieing is decietful and hurtful. the only reason we fear to be honest is because of the evils we commit.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife
this one I have mixed feeling on. desiring a woman is natural, I see nothing wrong there. to actually sleep with another mans woman I dont really have a problem with either, if she consents then youve done him no harm, she has. but if she is comminted to him and you seduce her, if she truly did not want to stray from him then you have done them both harm and that is a truly evil thing.
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor
ok thats pretty much saying do not steal all over again. unless the implication is that you shouldnt want what someone else has. that the evil is in the desire. I see nothing wrong there, with the exception that we are all overly materialistic and no item we posses can truly make us happy. the things we enjoy having are not enjoyed for the material value but for the intrinsic worth they posses. gifts given by people we love, items that remind us of the people who presents them to us.
soin summary the 10 commandments arent absurd for the most part, theyre mostly just signposts along the road toward being a decent human being. my only arguments being against the ones that direct us to deny our desire, our nature. I esentially believe hedonism is a better path so long as it is tempered by reason and compassion. the excess is its downfall. we should do what feels good, what makes us happy. so long as it does not bring harm to another. sex is phenominal...but just because you want to have sex doesnt mean it would be acceptable to rape someone. to force yourself on them would be to put them through an experience that would not make them feel good and therefore not give them the happiness that you experience from the action. and by causing such pain and sadness we hurt ourselves as well. despite the modern mentality we must not ignore that we naturally love other human beings. and by harming one another physically or emotionally we inflict the same pain on ourselves for having done so. there is no such thing as a heartless person, there are simply people who have been hurt to such an extent that they no longer see the love they posses for others. they have instead masked it with their attempt to take revenge on those who hurt them originally and those attempts are manifested in their lashing out at other people who remind them of who they themselves were at the time of that painful experience. and so their revenge against those who hurt them are turned inward and displaced onto those who resemble their pst selves, thus their revenge is exacted against themselves. we hurt ourselves out of a selfloathing stemmed from the implied weakness that allowed us to be hurt in the first place.
fuck Im ranting a bit. religiong does that to me.
the main problem I have with religion is that its pretty much a display of ignorance and fear. its mankinds way of putting some false definition and sense of understanding onto any situation we dont grasp the meaning of.
no we are not infinitely intelligent, yes we have to work and learn to understand things. no we dont know what death leads to. but thats no justification to live your life according to the "word of God" that some other human being wrote.
the majority of the is judeo/christian, muslim, or buddhist...because when societies were first starting to form and people started to interact with one another they share ideas and so different peoples religions and creation stories and such were exchanged and like minded individuals began to congregate together and before long majorities began to emerge which swayed more people to join this religion or that. and then as large societies began to colapse...such as the "holy" roman empire the major religions that were already in place continued to be followed since people were no longer gathered together and no longer exchanging ideas. and so people, instead of returning to thiinking for themselves now that they were no longer under the influence of the masses, just went on believing what society had pushed them to.
yay for not thinking for yourself. yay for being sheep!
