Not a good morning today. I am so incredibly frustrated and angry with work; the program, some of the people, the clients...all of it.

I don't know many jobs where abuse it a regular part of going to work. But it kind of goes with working with the type of kids we have at the program. But it's kind of hard to make any kind of headway with these kids when the administration keeps squeezing in as many new kids as they can fit in a bed, forcing a bunch of very anti-social, ant-authority kids in a crowded and very regulated situation. There's no breathing room, no privacy or room to roam, so of course tempers flare, bullies emerge and the staff end up catching the most grief day by day as they try to sort things out and work towards a goal.

Of course it is only worse when it is compounded with the fact that the program often hires new people just to fill a spot on the shift roster, not because they are actually qualified to work with emotionally disturbed and at risk boys. The newest person on my shift has never worked with kids. He started out as one of our maintenence men, who became an overnight after he couldn't hack someone giving him directions on how to care for the facility...what the fuck? This guy couldn't take directions on how to spackle a hole in the wall from his maintenence supervisor, so now I have to hold his hand through dealing with kids who are violent and sex offenders. He came on the shift with an attitude like he knew what he was doing, and promptly told the other overnights to back off when he was working a room, he could deal with it without them "butting in". So far all he's done is fuck up things on my shift and make my job as the supervisor tougher. Add this to everything else, and I want to leave.

I've put my entire adult life into that job, and it'll be really tough to move on, but if my managers can't recognize that I won't continue to work in such conditions and practices, I will have to do it. More to the point, I hope the recognize how fucked that shift will be without me holding it together.
