Wow, this topic is very controversial and I'm hoping there won't be really bad stories here, cause in 21st century discrimination shall be left behind in most developed/developing countries.

My story is about discrimination of people who have tattoos. Russia's still recovering from the influence the USSR had on this poor country and some people are still associating tattoos with serving a sentence in prison. I do get judged a lot by men and women over 40 - 50 years old. They ask me what my tattoos mean and whether I'm having them forever and if I'm a drug addict or a whore or have been to prison and they never take me nor any young person with tattoos seriously. There's sarcasm and judgment in their voice and actions. Even though I've always been and still am happy to work in companies with modern way of thinking where people don't really care if I have any tattoos at all as long as I'm good at whatever job I'm doing there are still customers who just won't get to me because of my ink or they'll make a sarcastic comment like "oh, yeah, I forgot, you can't help me, cause you don't even have kids and probably never will, just look at you". Or worse. There used to be a security worker in the store I work in and he just won't leave me alone asking dumb questions about my tattoos and what "crime" did I get them for (remember the prison thingy?). Luckily, he got fired really quickly.

The worst thing are the doctors. If your doctor is an elderly lady it's a dread. I'm afraid to go to the gynaecologist, cause every time there's an old lady doctor I'll have to face the humiliation of her questions about drugs, veneral diseases, about how many sexual partners I've had and she'd be rude and would try to hurt me while examining me.

One of the stories I heard is about a pregnant girl with tattoos who got to the hospital because her labour has started and when she was carried inside the nurse cried to the doctor "We've got another AIDS girl in labor here, I won't work with her!". And the girl never had AIDS or anything whatsoever! She was perfectly fine and just because she had tattoos she was mistreated during her labour, when she was just about to give birth to a child.

I'm happy to know that most people of my generation are ok about tattoos and even though they don't have them themselves they don't judge people. I'm also happy that our children will probably have a much easier life where they won't be discriminated because of anything.

@missy @rambo thanks for the topic!

That's the best part, what makes them so interesting.  Why did you get your first tattoo & usually there's a reason & a lot of thought behind each and every one - especially when you have a lot.  Not a lot of people (I hope) walk into a shop & say cover me with whatever you want.  Meanings change too & can be generational or geographical,  I see a lot of younger folks have variations of spiderwebs now, some very intricate & beautiful.

@ivylina, great post & that comment about the doctors really struck me.  I can't imagine having to go through something like that on a regular basis or even the worry of it.
