I watched 60 Minutes last night because they were doing a story on Lance Armstrong (that was OK, but could have been better). The first story they did, however, revolved around following a regiment of soliders in Iraq, specifically around an area where a lot of guys have been blown to shit from roadside bombs. They spoke to one of the guys in charge and asked him about his mission. He stated that to pull out now would be an insult to the soldiers that had died and that they would keep fighting for their fallen comrades. So their mission is simply revenge at this point? I was confused.
This is pretty similar to what Bush had to say yesterday: "We owe it to those who have made sacrifices to continue toward the goals they fought (for)," he said. "I see from up close what's happening in Iraq, and I know we are making steady and substantial progress."
But there are a lot of people who know their shit and are a lot more "up close" to all of this who are saying the opposite. According to AP "Gen. John Abizaid, commander of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf region, told a Senate panel Thursday that more foreign fighters are coming into Iraq than were six months ago" which greatly contradicts Dick Cheney's assertion that the Iraqi insurgency is in it's "last throes".
When cornered on this, Cheney busted out his dictionary, immediately siliencing any who dared to challenge his deep and vast lexicon: "If you look at what the dictionary says about throes, it can still be a violent period, the throes of a revolution." Oh...ok...I get it. Hmm... yes....you are wise fuckface.
Last night while falling asleep to CNN, Rumsfeld said that the war in Iraq could last another 12 years. 12 years. Doesn't sound like the last throes of anything to me. Here's a word for you Cheney - "Protraction". Rumsfeld was followed by some military robot who demanded that the American people support the troops and it's mission. Our boys would, he claimed, fight better and succeed more quickly without having to worry about whether or not they have support at home.
Don't do that to me, I'm not a fucking simpleton. Don't try to make me feel as though the survival of people rest squarely on my political leanings. Like everyone else, I want these guys to come home unhurt and my belief that this war is bullshit does not change that. It has nothing to do with it as a matter of fact.
My mom had two bumper stickers on her car for a while - one that read "Support Our Troops" and a second that read "Impeach Bush". She intentionally placed them right next to each other to make one statement: "Support our troops: Impeach Bush". Clever that mom of mine.
Regardless, I'd be willing to bet that bringing "our boys" home NOW would better prevent their deaths along with a lot of innocent Iraqi deaths as well. I think that word is called "DUH". Look it up Dick.
