ok, so today has been a fascinating day, mentally. it's amazing how sometimes, you're doing 10 different things, but they all seem to pool together into a common theme which has interesting contradictions and implications for your general approach to life.
So today I
-watched doctors remove a pre-cancerous mole from my mother's back, and stitch it up. This led me to once again reflect on my somewhat disturbing obsession with illness, and wonder if i should be worried about the fact that i totally want stitches - they're so pretty!
- finished Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood's latest book. Not very good, but had some interesting ideas about genetic modification, civilization, and immortality.
- read an article in the NYTimes magazine about the War on Terror
- watched some tv special about extreme body modification
- talked to a friend of my parents who has just decided to divorce her husband, also a friend of my parents. we assumed that this trial separation was her sudden whimsical desire for independence. in fact, her husband has been cheating on her for most of their marriage, and she's finally fed up. it's a pretty depressing scene. her children don't know about their father's mistresses, and think that their mother is being selfish.
(this in turn reminded me of the sopranos latest season, and capturing the freedman's, both of which i've watched in the last 3 weeks or so)
-read an article about new studies in morality and neurology which suggest that our sense of morality is in fact hardwired into our brain.
So i have multiple threads of thought on several somewhat related themes. at the same time, i've started cross-stitching a quilt square for my friend's son, so yeah, lots of time to think.
it's glorious. also makes me really excited for school to start up, where i can actually start putting my brain to productive use.

im in a really similar boat, though i havent had much time to think about everything. the fact that you were able to write out the individual threads makes me realize that i really should just chill today and write to you and just kind of think. that, and orientation is over, so i can actually do that now. awesomeness.
twwly:
It's not a change in eye colour (I wish), just the top picture is darker and more contrasty than the bottom.
