Oddly enough, the more that I think about it, the more I think that the State really should have nothing to do with marriage. Civil unions should have the same rights marriages do, and whatever symbolic process two people want to go through should be connected to their church or friends or whatever. No need for the government to have anything to do with it.
At least, that's what I've been pondering. I haven't thought it through that carefully yet.
