Today I did something I haven't done in a very long time: I walked home from school reading a book. I used to do it all the time in elementary school - the walk home was about a mile, and most of it was a straight shot down a big street lined with farms and fields, ie, no sidewalks to worry about. Today's walk was a little tougher, but I've also gotten better at multi-tasking. Sort of. I mean, I did nearly get hit by a car, which was pretty scary. The driver yelled at me a lot, and I apologized profusely, and it was sort of embarassing and a little frightening, but everyone came out ok. It's nice to walk and read at the same time - it takes your mind off of how incredibly cold it is. But in the future, I will not read while crossing the street.

Oh, if you're wondering, I'm reading Little Children, by Tom Perotta. Nice and fluffy. I finished Galatea 2.2 - it takes awhile to get into it, but it's worth the payoff. Good stuff. Next up: Cryptonomicon, and then Nuns and Soldiers, an Iris Murdoch novel that my man gave me for Christmas. Getting books as presents is so fucking rad. Especially when someone gives you a book that they've read and enjoyed and think you're going to love. I think it's one of the best things a person can give you, actually. Totally awesome. So if you're wondering what to get me for Christmas, now you know.

Update:
Finished reading Little Children. It's marvelous; I strongly recommend it. Really great book. Before I launch into Cryptonomicon, however, I'm gonna make myself write a very overdue paper on Dostoevsky...

Yeah, she isn't into leaving the house, really. She's too shy.

I have a hard time reading and walking because it kinda makes me motion sick. I used to read on the bus, but I could only do it for about 15 minutes before I got sick, so I'd just open the book and pretend to stare at the pages so people wouldn't bother me.

Also, Cryptonomicon is really great. It's a little hard to keep it open, but worth it.

thursday:
oi. books.

i used to be able to read anything. now i can't finish it if it doesn't grab me in the first 100 pages (ie: the satanic handbook). right now i'm reading "Tomorrow we will be killed with our families" (or something close to that), it's about the war between the Hutu and the Tutsis in Rwanda.
