well, in regard to nicotine, people who smoke during pregnancy are much more likely to have a low-birth weight pregnancy, and something like 20% of all low-bw births are thought to be related to smoking. also, the baby is most likely addicted to nicotine when it is born, so it is going through withdrawal right away, making it excitable, jittery, etc. there is also an increased risk for developmental problems in the brain, retina, or GI tract. that stuff is less directly implicated, but smoking while pregnant is thought to contribute to a mal-adaptive stress response at a young age and a possible learning-impairment.
as for the kids in the study about cocaine, they were five time more likely to show sign of mental retardation than the normal population (of the country, not the study). so yeah, they were pretty fucked up mentally as a result of the mothers' drug use. fucking people. oh yeah, and the kids had a greater frequency of heart malfunctions during developments.
