I participated in a tour of historic ethnic Chicago neighborhoods today. It was an event for alumni. It started at the Jane Addams Hull-House. All I can say is what an incredible woman she was. Social reformer, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, co found of the Hull-House Settlement where as many as 10,000 new immigrants a day came through. The settlement was where Upton Sinclair worked daily on "The Jungle" and debated democracy and reform with the likes of Ida B. Wells. When she and Ellen Star founded the settlement, the first thing they did was create Chicago's first free public art gallery, in the belief that everyone deserves to see beauty. She co-founded the ACLU and the NAACP. She paved the way for experimental neighborhood theater and child labor laws. Anyway, I found it incredible. More at Hull-House Museum
