A few weeks ago, the house I grew up in burned pretty badly. My grandfather had owned the house for over fifty years; my mom and her sisters grew up there, and so did I about thirty years later. We found out about the fire from the people currently (well, not anymore) renting the house. Bad wiring, apparently.
What is so special about this house is the mural. My late grandmother was a skilled artist, working in paint, poetry, design, and song. When my mom was a kid, my grandmother created this wonderful mural of Disney's Alice In Wonderland on the wall of my mother's bedroom. When the family moved out of the house, my grandfather covered the mural with sheetrock to protect it, and it was not seen for decades.
Today, I accompanied my mother and grandfather to tear the soot-stained wall from over the painting. We stood in the blackened house, swimming in memories and marvelling at the mural, which I had never seen before. This was literally a once-in-a-lifetime moment, a time to reflect on years passed and memories left behind. Having known my own grandmother only as an old woman, I am becoming more and more aware of the extent of her creativity, and I am thankful that the family did so much to preserve it.
There's a tour of the house in my pics. Go ahead, take a look.
