To SG, or not to SG.

I spend.
WAY.
Too.
Much.
Time.
on the SG boards.

Seriously. Look at my comments page -- most mornings, every evening. Tell me something I can do with my time that's more productive, or physical. I need to tear my eyes away from the damn box.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play a video game.

So... like... y'know... if I, like, smoke a few, man, I'll, like, definitely let you, like, in on the deal, man. Wow.

But probably I won't be smoking a few, alas... the old brain needs to be working at top capacity these days, and dope interferes with that. Ah, well... one of these days! (Funny how so many of my comments these days seem to presuppose that I'll actually finish my effing degree someday... all Good Things in life seem to be post-degree... sigh.)

On the video game front, I'm aching to try Half-Life 2... but I must be strong!!!
oldzork:
Spelunking... I'd love to give it (more of) a try sometime... but it'll probably have to wait until this <insert expletive> degree is done... wink

RE: spelling: The problem is too many letters of specific types. If I use American spelling, I'll be left with a surplus of U's and various other letters, which I won't know how to deal with. I spell in "Canadian-style" so that the surplus will not become an ecological issue! We don't want all those extraneous "U's" cluttering up our seashores, interfering with seabirds, now... :-)

The Dark Ages were marked by stagnant growth, plague, war, and oppression. The people's highest value at the time: religion, specifically Christianity.

The Renaissance is noted for growth, creation, discovery, and a vast improvement in quality of life and general well-being. The values most highly prized at the time: science, art, philosophy, and the questioning of authority, particularly the religious authorities.

One of the top...

whatever It gets tiring to see a string of these kinds of quotes on the boards.

Anyway, it just struck me today that I should join a photography club. I've done music and acting; this will be another good way to...

oldzork:
I don't know if the intelligence distribution is symmetric or not. I know that IQ tests are designed to produce a normal distribution of scores, but that doesn't mean much. I've met more smart people than stupid ones, but I spend almost all my time at university, so my sample is biased.

The more I think about it, the more I think it doesn't make sense to represent intelligence as a single scalar quantity anyway. There are the obvious things like intuition versus logical deduction, and abstract math ability versus concrete engineering ability, and so on, but there are also more subtle things. I read a paper a while ago about a guy who had sustained damage to one particular part of his brain. His ability to reason about risk situations was unimpaired (IF I do this THEN I'll probably die SO don't do it), but his ability to reason about logically identical trust situations was completely trashed (e.g. IF I give Bob my money THEN he'll steal it SO don't do it.. but he'd go ahead and do it). He was studied fairly extensively (neurologists love people with interesting brain injuries... smile ). It appears in this case that logically identical operations are handled by different regions of the brain, casting into serious doubt the notion of a "general logic processor" in there that's used for all kinds of things, and presumably has something to do with "intelligence". Another example is face recognition versus other kinds. There's evidence that we have extremely specialized wetware for recognizing faces... much more accurate than our normal recognition facilities. So somebody could be really good at recognizing faces, but terrible at general cognitive tasks involving recognition. I think we're going to need some kind of many-dimensional space here...

Every time I go out to any kind of gathering, I put this pressure on myself to meet people. I feel ashamed and a failure if I don't/can't strike up a conversation or flirt with anyone, which I usually don't. IT SUCKS. I'm trying to find some friends, and ideally a girlfriend, but as long as I keep thinking about it I can't do it!...

If I don't know anyone, I get all shy. Then I don't talk to anyone and feel sad afterwards for preventing myself from having a good time. I know how you feel!

Okay, what's up with Emily_M? frown I would say I could see her at Rocky, but I can't do Rocky anymore, seeing as how I work weekends at 9am. Eh, maybe it's for the best. She probably has better things to do than spend time on a website. I need to spend some time away from SG too.

Oh, but there are some BEAUTIFUL sets...
