I can say that in 99.9384% of the time, asking for a kiss is a less then stellar move.
If she wants to kiss you it'll come up.
Anything else though is kinda not so good.
If you guys have been friends for a "very long time" and it hasn't come up yet, the feelings probably aren't mutual and it'd be best to leave things as they are, rather then put yourself in an awkward situation by trying to force something.
Maybe you could tell her you'd love to find someone like her to make out with, or something... but make it clear you're talking about "someone as cool and awesome and (blah blah blah) like you are"?
Even that would most likely bring up awkward situations.

So about that river.... Mother Nature kicked my ass that day. I flipped off my raft and tumbled down stream for I'd say, about 75 yards. Luckily, I had a friend there that came to my aid.
