As an Englishman, who has recently dated an American girl, I'd have to say that it's a long way from being an insurmountable problem.

Although admittedly, the solution to it from our point of view, as long as we lasted, seemed to be that I would speak in a more American idiom. Sometimes I still ask where the 'bathroom' is, or similar things. Yeah, I take it back. She Americanised me. But not my spelling.
