I just have another small point to add: Who we are is not a static entity. Identites (and we certainly have a multitude therof based on the various situations we find ourselves) change. And that's good.
(And I can absolutely relate to the shy and awkward kid thing. I lived like that for a long time and although many people perceive me to be outgoing, strong and self-confident, I have to admit that this shy kid still is inside of me and comes out to play every now and then.)
