car is fixed. still a little noise, but not what it was. not sure what the noise is, something to figure out. then again, taking apart the brakes, removing the rotors, taking the entire steering knuckle out and replacing the tie rods....all to replace the wheel bearings, yeah, something might have changed.

started around 2:30 PM. my step-father's front license plate holder fell off. he went to one auto shop, that told him "Nope, we don't have that, you might have to go to Honda for that," (he has a Honda Accord, 1998). the license plate is actually mounted on a bolt on the bottom of the front bumper, and is "L" shaped. I went to Advance Auto, got a $5 universal holder and drilled the holes. had to have help removing the old holder, which had bolts that rusted on. got that mounted and everything.

my step-father's response...."I see you had to drill holes in my car to mount the license plate."

yup....and if you check many cars with a front license plate, you will see the same thing.

then started on my car.....started around 3:30 PM. 5 rusted bolts, 1 really rusted bolt that stripped (thankfully got vice grips on it....and Pep Boys gave me a nut from the "junk pile" to replace the nut), 2 bolts torqued to 160 foot lbs. and 2 tie rods where the bottom bolts were rusted on. some tools used included a DeWalt Reciprocating Saw (to remove the tie rods) and an impact wrench.

trip to Pep Boys after removing the steering knuckle. took them about an hour to change the bearings (only break really). drive back to replace everything (and a few fights with the car) and replace the tie rods. done around 11:30 PM with a test drive.

total cost for everything...

2 x $41.99 for the bearings
$70 for pushing the bearings off/pushing the bearings on
2x $24.99 for the tie rods

Pep Boys quote for doing the job....$540

and then add tax as well.

oh the joys. and how did you spend your Wednesday?

what makes it even better.....started off replacing the front license plate holder for my step-father's car. his broke off (and New York State requires a front and back license plate). the older holder was held on by a bracket under the bumper (1998 Honda Accord). this one is mounted right onto the front bumper, in the "flat spot" where the plate goes.

his response?

"I see you had to drill holes in my car."

gee, no thank you for buying the parts and doing the work (including getting the old plate out of the old holder that had the bolts rusted tight). nice, huh?
