Gone walking
Through the hills
Across valleys and
Distant meadows
When a madness
Struck me,
Plainly I broke
Clearly I spoke
There must be reason
Why I suffer today
There must be a purpose
For I will die without
Knowing my place.
When I stumbled heavily
Into an old grave, though
The headstone gave no name;
Nor date, it had etched
These words:
“I outlived those who cared for me
By cheating the tender night.
I grew ancient and became
Nothing more than a God among men.”
“But then a gangrene struck me,
I was once again a mortal man.”
“I plunged deep into the river
And knew that it would flow without me;
I tried to feed the wildlife,
But they fend for themselves.”
“I scavenged and hunted
Yet still, there was life.
I reflected, I pondered
Yet still, there was death.”
Once I read these words,
I no longer feared the devils’
Ordnance,
I will leave this world untouched.
