Fallen Wings (Chapter V) Rollercoaster To The Quarry...
"Ok guys, we have been sitting around long enough. Let's get moving sowe can get out to the quarry. It's already 3 o'clock, if we don't leave now we won't get to look around ot there before night fall." Said John with all of his seriousness intact. " I want to get to that spot that Old Man Parkns was talking about, maybe we can find something."
" Do you really think we are going to find a feather or some wing out there John?' Asked Jennifer, she had a touch of fear in her voice. After all it didn't sound like that thing that Old Man Parkins found wasn't all that friendly.
"Yes I do think we will find something Jennifer." Said John, picking up on the fear in her voice, and knowing just how to calm her with his own tone. "Would I bring everyone out here if I didn't think I would find something?
"No you wouldn't John." I answered for her, saving her from having her voice trembling in front of the other guys again. They were like a wolf pack out for the hunt. When they smelled fear they would attack, leaving no prisoners. I wasn't about to let them get at her again, after what happened earlier in the day.

Back on the trail again. We headed deeper into the woods towards the quarry. It was like any other walk we had taken in these woods. Alot of joking around and me doing my best imitation of a master tracker. I would point out footprints and snake tracks to everyone, esspecially Paul, since he was afraid of snakes. It was always good to get a rise out of him, by seeing the look on his face when you said the word snake.
"Look do you see that?"
" What?" Paul asked.
"That thin line that kinda of wiggles on the trail there." I said. "That is a rattle snake trail, do you see it Paul?"
"Oh man, why do you always do that? You know how I feel about snakes." Said Paul.
While Paul was saying this, Joe was sneaking up behind him with his coin purse in his hand. When he got right up behind him he shook it near his head, sending Paul jumping and running down the trail. A roar of laughter erupted from everyone. Of course this made Paul real mad and he stormed off up the trail saying he wanted to be alone. We knew that this was his way of trying to get back at us. What Paul would do was run up the trail in front of us and try to hide, and when we got close he would jump out and try to scare us. He would never learn, we were always prepared for it and would gang tackle him when he would jump out.
"How far do you think Paul is going to go this time?" I asked John.
"You know, the norm. About a hundred yards up the trail behind the big tree right before the rollercoaster trail." John said, readying himself for the tackle that was going to come.
"Yeah you are probably right. I wish I had my bike so we could ride the rollercoaster trail instead of walking it." I said, half daydreaming about racing down the trail to the end where the big dip and the jump were.
The rollercoaster trail was our favorite place to go on our bikes. It was a trail that ran along the ditch that seperated the front of the woods where we normally stayed and the back of the woods, that was the home of the quarry. It would curve and wind and dip the whole length of the deep part of the ditch. At the end of it was a deep dip that is where we would cross. The dip dropped about 10 feet and then had a steep rise, that if you had enough speed on your bike, you could launch out of it like a ball out of a cannon. The bottom of the dip was a shallow in the ditch where someone had cut down a few trees and layed them across the ditch in order for people to cross with ease.
"Hey, there is the big tree, everyone get ready." John whispered so that Paul wouldn't be tipped off to us knowing where he was. We snuck up to the tree expecting him to jump out and us catching him in mid air, but he never jumped out. We stopped. Stunned by the fact that he hadn't sprung his little trap.
"Look." I said bending down to pick up a feather similiar to the one that John had in his back pack. "Look there at the ground."
On the ground you could see Paul's footprints leading up behind the tree in the grey florida sand. They lead right up to a big mess in the sand, as if there was a struggle there. It looked as if he was kicking in the sand, but there were no drag marks on the ground from the spot. It looked as if he was just lifted up from the ground and disappeared.
"What do you make of It Ron?" Asked John.
"It's weird, it looks like he was just lifted up and flown away. He couldn't have jumped. Look there are no footprints anywhere else except the ones that lead up to this spot here.
Around the tree was a large patch of sand that surrounded the tree by a good ten feet or so.
"Yeah, Paul can't jump that far, and why would he do that anyways?" Asked Dennnis "He always hides here and jumps out at us."
"Maybe he finally got wise to us tacklinghim everytime." Rusty said.
"He must of found some way to do it, and is just hiding further up the trail." Said Jennifer. "I bet he is up at the big bend near the middle of the rollercoaster trail, that is where I would hide if I wanted to scare you guys.
"Yeah, you are probably right Jennifer." I said hoping for the best, but I could feel in my gut something was very wrong here. "Let's just make our way up the trail and find him. He definitely got us good this time. I am going to have to hand it to him on this one.
