Sometimes it takes a night out with good friends and music to restore me. I had an amazing night out Tuesday night--my friend Steven came down from Boston with a bag of delightful herb then we went to see Tackhead play.
Everyone I talked to about the show said the same thing: "Who?"
Tackhead is made up of Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald along with Adrien Sherwood running the On-U sound system. Wimbish and LeBlanc played on all the early Sugarhill singles--they played "The Message" Tuesday night (I forget who the guest rapper was). Check out www.tackhead.com to get the whole story.
But these guys do so much more--everything from mind blowing funk to heavy blues stuff. I don't know how to classify Wimbish's last solo release "Trippy Notes for Bass" but it's an excellent record to smoke out to.
The best part, of course, was spending the evening with Steven and wandering around NYC in a fog killing time until the show started. Being the totally amazing man he is he ended up chatting with the whole band. I'm always in awe of people who can talk to ANYONE.
And now everything seems just a little better.
