This may turn into some what of a rant, but here I go..

Since I was 16 I have always taken my dad to all of his doctor appointments at the veterans hospital. Each time ive taken him he apologizes to me and says he doesn't want to be a burden. I've explained that I not only love being able to be there for him, but the other veterans I meet up there have changed me. A lot of times while im sitting around while my dad is with the doctor I see veterans having a hard time getting around and what not and I try to help as much as possible. Most of them already know me by name because of that and the fact that I wont let them get pushed around.

One day I was sitting there and a teenager was going off on his grandfather calling him stupid and things because he had to sit with him. The man started crying and apologizing and I lost it. I went off the the teen and told him he could leave if he wanted to and i'd look after his grandfather. That man gave me the biggest hug that day and said thank you. The smallest thing brightens their day at the hospital, hell even if it's just giving a vet a cigarette they are highly thankful. The doctors abuse them, people look down on them and im tired of it.

I may not know a single one of them but if I get the chance I shake each and every one of their hands when possible. I wanted to fight for my country, but was turned down because of A. health reasons and B. being the only male in my family. So im proud of each and every one of those people who have served. I just hope one day they will get the respect and honor from every person around that they deserve.

This sort of thing is on my mind often these days. I've been in some turmoil over whether or not to join the military myself, but I keep coming back to how much damage it would do to my family if anything happened to me, and I just can't square that with myself.

It's very sad that fewer people remember the sacrifices of the people who came before us, considering none of us would be able to live our lives like we do, had it not been for them. I have the utmost respect for those people and what they did should never be forgotten or belittled.

Yeah it's just sad to see that the people who risked their lives for their country are getting treated the worst. More veterans die each year waiting for medical treatment than the number of soldiers killed in action. I just hope one day that will change.
